I actually know very little about plumbing, so I wasn't aware of how cheap drain snakes were. Doing it myself would probably be for the best. Thanks for the advice, I'll probably try running to Lowe's and Home Depot tonight to compare prices.

You can often get some that you can attach a power drill to, for added clog-removing fun.

You can get a "blow bag" from a hardware store. I bought one and use it several times to deal with a clogged shower drain that has a drum trap.

It looks like this:


you hook it up to a hose and it uses water pressure to unclog the drain. Very effective. I will unthread the aerator from a faucet and thread in a hose adapter.

Another good device that you can rent at a local rental place is the Kinetic Water Ram.


The other thing is that I would discourage you from using stuff like Liquid Plumber in the future. If you have to take the trap off, then you or the plumber can get exposed to that stuff. Mechanical means is the best way to deal with clogs.

Ticked: I have a nearly $400 power bill, a $120 cable bill, I'm unable to pay my $440 rent bill, I'm expecting a $700 bill from the federal government from taxes, and I owe about $400 in dues on my student loans, for a grand total of $2060 due by the end of the month.

On top of that I may have to pay the rental office for a plumber to come in and snake my bathtub. The drain is clogged. I've used two different types of Liquid Plumber, plunged it for several hours, and used a small plastic clog remover to no avail. My girlfriend and I are having to go to my mother's house for showers.

Smiled: I got a job today.

Ticked: It's at Waffle House, so I'm surviving off tips.

Smiled: My girlfriend also got a job.

Ticked: Her orientation isn't until July 17, so we likely won't see a paycheck until August. She'll also be a waitress.

Was thinking the same thing. Buying one will set you back less than 10 bucks, so no harm done if it doesn't work. Didn't know about the power drill ones though. They sure sound like the better option. If you have a power drill that is...

The inexpensive human powered "can" style works pretty well, the type that has a knob and handle. Feed a little at a time down the hole, lock the screw at the end and spin while forcing snake cable into hole. Too much cable between the screw tip and drain results in the cable twisting in loops and not going in the hole. Nice thing about the can is while you are spinning, the excess cable is in the can staying unkinked.

I thought they had locations outside of the South. There's plenty of them here in MO.
