Metal Gear Solid

Post by env963 »

With all the hype over this series, i decided to pick up metal gear solid 4 for my PS3. That was about a year ago. Still have it in the package and haven't opened it. Earlier this year i got a PSP, so i picked up peace walker. Also still in the package and haven't opened it. Well for some wild reason, i decided i need to start with the PSOne version, so i downloaded it off the PSN. That way i have the flexibility to play on the psp and or the ps3. After sitting down and finally getting the bug to actually play this game. I am not so sure its my kind of game. Kind of disappointed, I kind of knew this is a stealth game, but i find the game hard to play. Currently playing it on the PSP and im not getting very far. Ill probably try it on the PS3, hopefully this game "clicks" for me otherwise ill end up selling the other 2 games I bought. Would like to see more "action" and less hiding behind objects! LOL Kind of disappointed with it. Maybe im just bad at this kind of game? Am i just nuts or others have similar thoughts on this?

If you want more action, you'll probably like MGS4 the most. You can almost play that one like a shooter.

I think this was my initial reaction when I started playing it. I think the thing with Metal Gear is it utilizes a lot of story so it's kind of like a novel and a game rolled into one. Thus there can be periods of very little action and lots of plot.

I think once you play the game more you might start to appreciate it as you understand the story. Personally I found Metal Gear to be very well rounded in action. The boss battles are all very unique and challenging in just about every installment in the series. There are different ways you can play the game as well. The game rewards you more for not shooting enemies and not being caught - but it's more than possible to go through the game and shoot everyone you see, just not practical in every situation.

However maybe you won't like it as you go along. Metal Gear has a unique style and not everyone is going to be a fan of it.

Just look at the ZOE/MGS PS3 collection thread for proof of that.

I am going to give this some serious trial here. I wont give up on it yet. There have been other games, if you just continue it, it clicks for you. Batman Arkham Asylum was one for me.

If you want to play it more like an action game try going on an easier difficulty maybe.

There's a thread I made not too long ago about me finally getting into the MGS series. I've had the first one for PS1 for years and never played it (I played about 15-30 minutes years ago and that was it). Maybe you should check out Twin Snakes (updated graphics of the first MGS for the Gamecube, along with some other minor differences, also being a little easier). I enjoyed that one enough to make me wanna play through the original version, which I did. After you know what you're doing, you can blow through that game pretty fast.

But yeah, I can totally relate to you, env963. Years ago, I just could NOT play a stealth game with long cut scenes. I was not capable of doing it. I was just thinking, "Boooooring!" to myself. So I know exactly what you're talking about.

Anyway, I played MGS2 after that. It was alright. But then I played MGS3. Let me tell you, I went from never played a MGS game to MGS3 being one of my favorite PS2 games ever. The first two, I can take it or leave it. But MGS3, it's such an amazing game. I have MGS4 sitting on my shelf, but haven't played it yet. One day.

But yeah, I would suggest trying to play 3. I mean, if you can't tolerate MGS1 enough to finish it, don't give up on the series. MGS3 really is an amazing game, MUCH better than the first two (just make sure you play the Subsistence version). Much more action, a lot more you can do. If you don't wanna be all stealth, you don't have to. My first run through the game, I killed just about every body I came across. I played through it a second time immediately afterward and tried to not kill any one (save for the bosses).

Honestly I'm just gonna have to second MrEco's idea. That's the greatness of the MGS games is that you don't totally have to play them stealthy if you go on the easier difficulties or whatnot. It's not "HOLY CHRISTMAS FISHER" stupid like the Splinter Cell games or anything.

I don't recommend playing them out of order at all though.

I never could stand stealth games either, but about a year ago I bought MSG2 and had a play. I didnt finish it, although I played enough of it for it to change my mind. I started out bungling thru the rooms, but after watching a few vids on you tube I soon learnt how to do it properly and I'm pretty much converted now. Worth sticking with I think

I remember being turned off by MGS's stealth based gameplay back when I still had a PS and borrowed one from a schoolmate.

...but lately, I absolutely loved Batman: Arkham Asylum even with the stealth sequences and the parts of Spiderman: Shattered Dimension that I liked the most was the Noir stages. Based on my fondness for the Batman and Spiderman stealth parts, will I enjoy revisiting MGS? Or are they different beasts altogether?
