Is Brawl THAT Much Better Than Melee?

Post by racketboy »

I don't have a Wii and don't plan on getting one in the very near future, but part of me thinks I should hold off on buying Melee and hold out for the day when I can get Brawl.

Is Brawl superior enough to make such a sacrifice?

Brawl's got a bigger cast of characters, and swapped out a lot of the palette swap characters from Melee, though this has apparently brought some balance issues into the game. Some people really didn't care for the single player game in Brawl, either, mainly Subspace Emissary. While I personally enjoyed what I saw of Subspace Emissary, I was also playing it as part of a group we'd swap out to let folks play to their strengths. I thought Brawl was pretty nifty, and I will eventually pick it up, but it's not a must have title for me.

As far as multiplayer goes, more people will be playing Brawl than Melee...if you plan on playing a lot with others, Brawl's probably the big title right now.

That's placing a little too much faith into Nintendo.

I think it's more accessible than Melee was; Melee required you to learn and master numerous techniques in order to stand a chance in a competitive game (like wavedashing, L-cancel, chaingrab, etc.), and yes there were a lot of balance problems with Melee. It seemed like everyone and their cousin played Fox/Marth/Shiek and ridiculed anyone else you used as a main. I've had Brawl for a few weeks and I would say it's probably the better way to go if you are a person who loves fighting games, but don't intend to be hardcore by abusing every single tactic that wasn't meant to be there in the first place; it's also nice to see one that hopefully in a competitve setting won't boil down to the field only using about 5 different characters.

In my opinion, no. Melee and Brawl are two very different flavors that look the same from a distance. I much prefer the original, for its flowing, smooth gameplay. I have yet to attain the same feel from Brawl. Melee is much more worth it.
