I know I know, it is a topic beaten to death by so many, why bring it up again. Well I have some backups that play in my version 0 (August 99) dreamcast, that do not load in my version 1 (December 99), or my friends version 1 (January 00), but do load in another friends version 1 (December 99). No matter how the images come (bin/cue, mdf/mds, cdi, nrg, etc) they just will not play in all of them. My Dec99 one is the worst of them all. Any of you dreamcast geniuses have any ideas?
Backups are burned at 4x or 8x on standard Sony CD-R (50CDQ80LS3) that I had from backing up the Saturn collection. Racket suggested that it may be the laser going, or just malaligned, but I figured I would ask some of you before I go tinkering inside. And I googled this quite a bit and never found a real answer, just got stuck in some forum rings.

But... Seriously, I would say the laser needs adjusted. Does it play originals perfectly fine? If it does, it probably just needs adjusted, if it doesn't play originals all too well, a replacement may be needed.

Try with a very small backup, like a codebreaker disc or some homebrew game. If it won't load that then IIRC some model 1s don't read CD-Rs for whatever reason, but I think that those are the later models, and you have an earlier one. If you do open it up and try to adjust the pot, make sure you make a diagram of where all the screws go because there is one screw that is longer than the others, and if you put it in the wrong spot you will make it go right through the mobo, likely destroying the video chip.
