Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3d

Post by jay_red »

I picked this up today since I had a gift card to toys r us (lets spare any flaming about the save issue) I have put a little time into it and gotten a good feel for it so decided to put up some thoughts about it.

First off, yes this is just an expanded version of the Mercenaries mode from 4 and 5 with some additions to give it some more meat. There are 8 total characters, each with their own weapon set and alternate costumes. There is local and online co-op play, I did play some rounds online and it was enjoyable, but pretty bare bones. You can either host a game or find one to join, once the round is over it kicks you back to a menu, with no option to continue with that player or anything. There didn't seen to be any communication between the players either.

The controls are amazing, and work perfectly with what the 3ds has to use. At no time did i feel limited or wising for another circle pad. Running is pressure sensitive on the circle pad, no need to hold a run button! Aiming and shooting feels familiar, using the R shoulder button to take aim. For the first time you can move while aiming also (although limited) you hold the L and R at the same time and you can move slowly, but can't adjust your aim until you release the L button. Item switching couldnt be better, with a quick press of the touch screen to choose weapons or items. They mapped the button to use herbs (for healing) to the A button to allow for quick access also.

The graphics are excellent, looking very close in detail to the most recent RE:5, of course the resolution isnt there, and there is plenty of ailising on as well. It seems to run smoothly except for when enemies are off in the distance, they start to stutter, almost as if you are playing an online game and the opponents have a bad connection. It isnt so bad that it breaks the experience. If this game can look this good this early on in the system's life, I cant wait to see what we are in store for in the coming years.

The gameplay is exactly what you expect, time limit, tons of zombies, kill everything in sight. It is tense and satisfying, but dont expect any real scares to be had. I enjoyed a mission set in the village from RE:4 that had me so overwhelmed with zombies that I was really starting to feel the pressure, then my online co-op buddy came to my rescue with a grenade. Moments like that are what the game is about. Each character has their own weapons, with the usual pros and cons of each. There is a system of "perks" for lack of a better comparison, but I didnt get to in depth with it yet. There are also an achievement style "medal" system for doing certain things similar to the 360 or ps3.

All in all i am satisfied with the game, it is great for a quick round or 2 without getting too involved, which is perfect for a handheld system. The online is fun but needs some more features to make it a standout addition. Don't forget about the playable demo of the other upcoming RE title "revelations", but dont get your hopes too high, as it was painfully short (about 3-4 minutes) and lacking in action. If you enjoy the mercenaries mode from the other games then you will be right at home here, if you are looking for a more fleshed out experience than you may be better off looking else ware.

I just picked this game up. I'm liking it as well, but man that lack of online options is lame. It feels very elementary the way the game just dumps you back to the loadout menu after your match with no clue as to who you played with. I wouldn't be surprised if this was once a tech demo and they just added a little more to it so they could ship it.

That being said, it shows how good the core resident evil game play is. If anyone wants to add me my gamertag is 4511 0549 7872.

Too bad you never heard the news about not being able to erase the save file. You could have saved yourself $40. I'm sorry man. Capcom really fucked you over there. I know I would be super pissed if this happened to me.

On the bright side, Capcom has learned their lesson and said they wouldn't do it again.
