Yeah, right.

At a corporate level you're right, they're just profiteers and nothing more. However, when I think of a video game company, I think of the developers, not the CEOs and such. Capcom used to have developers that DID care about us and genuinely tried to make excellent and creative games.

I'm with brunoafh there. I don't give a damn about numbers or that sort of thing when it comes to how I regard most companies. Most of Capcom's new IP's this gen have been terrible, they lost Kamiya (DMC, etc), Mikami (RE, etc), and even Keiji Inafune (Mega Man) himself this gen and obviously their creative direction has plummeted into the ground lately, just like Square Enix. I'm sorry to say but I've lost plenty of respect that I used to have for Capcom over the last few years. I'm not going to be a fanboy about it or keep my nostalgia goggles on when the facts are there. If they want my attention again, they need help.

I'm feeling Konami might be one of the very last companies I still might respect a good bit after 20 some years. I was praising Capcom for being one of the only companies I've consistently loved the longest just a few years ago but then suddenly... shit happened, big shits.

As someone who loves to play through some my favourite games from the very start fairly regularly (MGS for PS1 at least once a year for eg) to have a game that gives me only one real play through before becoming useless to me is something that will make me not want to touch a game that has the Capcom logo on it from here on out.

It's another one of those sad occasions where the cracked/pirated game is the more enjoyable experience than the legitimate purchase. Game companies need to find a system that rewards legitimate buyers rather than punishes them. They are doing things entirely in reverse.

It's interesting that we bring up Konami. They are the only other company with the hardcore cred of Capcom and have been around just as long. I always thought that both companies had similar histories and liked to play in the same playgrounds. I mean they dominated arcades with their beat'em ups at one time and in the 16-bit days nobody could outdo Capcom or Konami for licensed games except maybe Sega. You look at their legacy in influencing the platform genre too with Mega Man and Castlevania. You look at the rivalry of Silent Hill and Resident Evil.

Then you fast forward and look at the iconic characters they created last gen with Snake and Dante. I think it'd be fascinated to read an article just comparing the two companies and their histories as I've always kind of viewed both companies as mirror images of eachother in a lot of ways, except Konami has never shown me the amount of corporate greed I always saw in Capcom

I just wanted to throw my hat into the "goddammit Capcom" ring. I'm a pretty broke-ass college gamer, I rarely, if ever, buy games new. I have hundreds of games, and I've probably bought maybe a dozen or so new, and most of those were specific games that I'd waited years for (StarCraft II, etc.). If it weren't for used gamed, honestly I probably would hardly be into videogames, because I couldn't afford it. I don't know about other people, but for me it's not "Oh the used copy is cheaper so I'll get that instead of buying it new" it's: "Oh there's a used copy that's cheaper, I'll buy this game instead of not buying it at all." Maybe I'm in the minority here, but that's the way I see it.

And to MrPopo, I completely and totally disagree with your idea that used games are in any way harmful to the videogame industry, but that's something far too complex to ever argue about, and I really don't know my economics well enough to properly get into the nitty-gritty. However, when you say that "Oh, this game is just an arcade shooter, it doesn't really matter about your save," you make a good point about this specific game, but the issue is larger than that. The issue is that if people accept this, then it's going to become a trend, and pretty soon you'll have an RPG that you won't be able replay. I don't know about you, but I certainly love digging out my old Zeldas and replaying them every so often, and if a company were to remove that ability I would be absolutely crushed. Not to mention the fact that it will completely destroy any future-retro scene, as most people don't want to play on another's save file.

So here's to flashcards for the 3DS allowing us to bypass such things. Hopefully if enough people get agitated, maybe, just maybe, the higher ups in these companies will finally realize that %90 of their "anti-piracy" measures only increase piracy, and that if they're losing money, it's because their games aren't up to par, not because some guy downloaded it off the internet.

I didn't know there were flashcards for the 3DS *already*. I thought Nintendo would be much more careful this time after the DS which had a big proliferation of that.

As for the used games issue, used games are beneficial to the industry. It is not that complex.

A. If 2 players buy a new game together, that is good for the industry. You don't go and say they should each buy a game instead, for all we know they are going to buy 2 games together because they buy games together or whatever. The point is they are buying the game.

B. If a player buys a new game and then sells it used, from the industry point of view it is the same as if 2 (or more) players pooled together to buy the game. The player that purchased the game new is diluting the cost by selling it used. It is not very relevant that the cost dilution is only happening after the initial purchase; the initial buyer is recouping some of the cost, so for all we know he/she is going to buy more games as he is able to make them effectively cheaper down the line by sharing the cost with some other buyers.

C. Even with stores like Gamespot or private people that buy and re-sell for a profit (which profit from buying and re-selling) it is still good for the industry. Granted that less money stands to be re-invested into new games as the arbiter is effectively lowering the amount the initial buyer recoups. On the other hand the initial (new) game buyer also is enabled in more easily selling it for some money (whereas with private used buyers who knows if he/she would find a buyer).

Aside from the fact that you can't sell the game, I'm not sure I understand what has people so angry.

Do people actually delete their saves every time they replay a game? I feel like just about every video game since the advent of game saves has let you replay the game without deleting anything. . . .

MrPopo wrote:It is. With regular piracy you have a non-paying customer. With used games you have a paying customer who doesn't pay the people who made the game.

This is simple. I buy a commodity. Since it's mine, I can sell it. If I sell it, I no longuer have the commodity, the number of commodities stays the same. Why should the developer get money from a second sale? It's not theirs anymore, it's mine because I bought it. You don't pay a fee to the furniture company if you decide to sell a chair.

The used market doesn't create more commodities, it only allows the legitimate owner of a commodity to fulfill their right to sell what they own. Basic rights of property and ownership, no more, no less.

And this is where the fun of game companies telling you that the cartridge is yours but the game on it is their ip and there for you only hold a licence to play the game while they allow you to do so and selling it to someone else is an offence akin to theft, a drum that Nintendo has been banging on for a long time now.

"You don't own the game, you're only licensed to play it while we let you."

is this still a full price game? i dont think it would be so bad if it was cheaper. if they are going to do this, i think a cheaper price tag would help sales and keep the uprising to a minimum. Hopefully this doesnt catch on
