Any CDR is harder to read then the pressed disc. The laser will work harder so in a sense the life does get shortened.

If you're using a modchip I wouldn't be too concerned.

If it burns out any faster, it will mostly be because you're playing so many more awesome games than you would have without the chip. 8)

The issues on Dreamcast had to do with wearing out mechanism that moves the laser, because the files weren't arranged optimally on the CD-Rs like they would have been on a real GD-ROM. Even there I've never seen a DC actually wear out completely from it. It just makes a "grinding" noise that scares the crap out of people. Either way, the physical layout of the files on a Saturn backup should be identical to the original.

Just to point out, people have started to release much higher quality Dreamcast games, like TuxTheWise. He pays strict attention to file order. I've read that some of his games have better file order than the official released versions of the games. And on top of that, these new Dreamcast releases often have better methods of down sizing games that go over a CD's capacity.

I've had a modded Japanese Saturn since 2000 and it's still running fine. I bought it off someone who had it modded in 1998. So, it's being going for around 14 years. Not a problem with it.
