There were mandatory updates on the Nintendo platform. New Super Mario Bros Wii required 4.1.

The 3DS will likely have mandatory updates (it's early in the life cycle) to confirm.

Some Wii games force you to update the system menu before you can play them. If you keep your system menu up to date (updates only happen yearly nowdays I think), you'd never run into this. These updates are on the disc though, and don't take very long. I thought the 3DS had some form of push, forced updates if you got in wireless range, but maybe that was just something they were thinking of doing a while ago...? I don't have a 3DS.

Yes and no. The Wii, 3DS, and DSi at least all have system updates that can be done. The way Nintendo does things - on the Wii at least - is that the system keeps all the versions of the OS (except ones patched for security reasons), so an older game can use the version of the OS it was tested on.

Games though... I think Nintendo actually prohibits patching in most cases, even when it'd make sense.

The Wii required a software update for New Super Mario Bros (although if you'd hacked your Wii, you knew that a system menu update was in fact NOT required, and could be ignored). For legit users though, it's update or no play.

If you want to continue to have access to the DSi store, you must accept the software update, though to be fair, it's not mandatory.

If you want your 3DS to have any relevance at all, you have to accept the latest update. :p

Nintendo's just as dumb as every other company. Just for different reasons.

The Wii has required firmware updates similar to how the PSP does. A given game will require you to have at least firmware version X in order to play. The update is on the disc so you don't need to be connected to the internet. And it's child's play to get around it if you've got homebrew on your Wii. But it does exist.

Yeah. I had to upgrade my PSP firmware to play Tactics Ogre. Lost the ability to use IRShell in the process.

Something like this doesn't bother me that much, I'm more than positive I have to download more updates for Steam/games than I ever do for my 360/PS3 anyways.
