MAME OS X and Hori 360 controller
I'm using MAME OS X and the Hori DOA4 Xbox 360 arcade stick. It works great for most games after downloading the driver from the tattiebogle site, however the Hori stick has the left trigger and right trigger buttons in the forward and roundhouse kick positions from Street Fighter.
MAME OS X does not recognize these buttons when I try to assign moves to them and so I can't play games that require the six buttons. There is also no way that I can see to change the button inputs from the driver preferences.
If anybody has a similar setup, can you tell me if you can get the Xbox 360 triggers to be recognized by MAME on the Mac? Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. It looks like this program should work, but it doesn't seem to recognize the stick at all. To assign button mappings, the help file says I should just push each button to highlight it in the middle menu, then choose a keyboard stroke to represent that button. But when I push a button, nothing happens.tbeeghly wrote:There is a program called USB overdrive, it's a shareware program, but it lets you override the hardware buttons and reassign your own depending on what applications you use the controller with. You might want to check that out.
I've tried assigning key strokes to various actions in MAME, then assigning buttons to the same keys in Overdrive, but nothing seems to happen. I've also tried assinging every button in the overdrive menu for joysticks and global settings to one letter on the keyboard but MAME still won't recognize the input from the stick.
The stick and all the buttons do work and are recognized by the driver I am using for it. Ugh.

Yes, exactly. In the MAME input menu, when I push either of those two buttons MAME does not recognize them at all...nothing shows up.skate323k137 wrote:this is one i wish i could sit down in front of... so what you're saying is when you're adjusting the inputs in MAME, if you push that button to assign it to a control it doesn't even show up as "joy 1 button 8" or anything?

If they're recognized by the driver, its possible a program for mac exists like joy2key that lets you map the buttons to keyboard keys. most likely it will require some patience if it's possible. then just assign the keyboard key in mame and you're all good.
edit; upon super quick googling, it looks like joy2key exists for mac

I tried Joy2Key and it was too complicated for my feeble mind! I couldn't even figure out how to get started...
So I tried another program called GamePad Companion which seemed easy enough to use but still I couldn't override what MAME was doing.
I even deleted my Xbox 360 controller driver...and the stick still works in MAME when it theoretically shouldn't (still not recognizing those two triggers, though).
So does this mean that MAME OS X will override everything else and has its own driver? I'm not completely stupid...so what am I doing wrong? For example, in the GamePad Companion program, I have mapped button 1 to the letter C. Then in MAME, I have mapped the main action button (say, the fire button in DoDonPachi) also to the letter C. This doesn't work. Pressing C on the keyboard works, but not pressing button 1 on the stick.
Anyway, since MAME recognizes most of the buttons on the stick it is okay for most games...just not any games requiring 6 buttons.
Bah...I'll get an adapter and play with my DC stick. Thanks anyway, guys.

yeah joy2key is a bitch, but i figured if you were up for it it's the only good idea I really had.... other than stuff that involves opening the stick and modifying that.
seeing as Mac OS is really similar to linux I'm sure thats why it recognizes it without a driver. Ubuntu Linux can recognize 10 buttons and all directions of my MAS systems stick, through a playstation2->usb adaptor.
it may not help but you can assign 2-button combos to a single action in mame, for example i mapped the start+select buttons simultaneously to quit the game.

nice, those sticks are aboslutely beautiful. I have the technical skill and knowledge to build arcade sticks, but I don't have anywhere near that kind of artistic ability. my stick collection is getting out of hand, right now i've got:
-crap saturn ascii stick
-Hori Real Arcade VF (the 3 button stick for saturn, it's actually REALLY nice)
-modded out Hori Fighting stick SS with saturn and PSX plugs (i've got a thread on it in hacks/mods. I just finished all 8 buttons and replacing the joystick switches.)
-MAS systems, discontinued gamecube button layout, with GC, PSX, and Dreamcast plugs. has happ competition joystick+buttons
-Hori Real Arcade 2 for PS2, currently dismantled, waiting on new buttons in the mail.
-unmodified "blaze" 2 player playstation stick. funny enough, it doesnt work for crap on playstation but is awesome with mame...
the only sticks i can't use with mame are the real arcade VF, and the crap ascii stick. everything else has PSX plugs that adapt perfectly to USB.
