And even then only if you previously used kits from CIOSCorp or DarkCorp, or if you modified the system menu.vlame wrote:you can install channels and upadate through the softmod. you can only get hurt with a softmod IF YOU UPDATE THROUGH NINTENDO. If you want to update, please update through Wad installer using CIOS and ISO packages.

I didn't think this would get folks so riled up!
Yesterday, after backing up the Animal Crossing save data, I used Wad Manager 1.5 to install a series of WADS as detailed in a walkthrough to "virginize" a 4.2U Wii.
The next step in the process was to run NandClean, which just wasn't showing up in HBC no matter what I tried. So I said screw it and ran a system update. It worked fine, but HBC and all my installed HBC apps (like USBloader) are still around.
So now I'm still softmodded, but updated to 4.3U - I have full access to Wii Shop and all content within. AC data is safe. So now maybe I'll just look into removing all the piracy apps like USBloader, etc, and maybe look for a way to remove HBC and call it a day.
I understand there's still a bunch of crazy stuff going with the firmware, and much of it is a little over my head - can you think of any ill long term effects from leaving things as they are?
At the end of the day, it seems like backtracking out of the softmod is even more complicated than the softmod itself.
Thanks for everyone's input!

Nope. I'm pretty sure the "re-virginize" kits remove the preloader and any hacked IOSes, but not any channels you've installed. Future Wii updates from Nintendo might kill the HBC. No other effects that I am aware of.firstmarker wrote:I understand there's still a bunch of crazy stuff going with the firmware, and much of it is a little over my head - can you think of any ill long term effects from leaving things as they are?

Wiibrew has a bold text line at the top of the page saying to only update through nintendo. Although they probably do assume you don't have cioses.vlame wrote:Everywhere you softmod say DO NOT UPDATE THROUGH NINTENDO you may brick your wii.
I think things should be fine.firstmarker wrote:I understand there's still a bunch of crazy stuff going with the firmware, and much of it is a little over my head - can you think of any ill long term effects from leaving things as they are?
If you delete your channels through the wii menu the wii will leave some traces of the channel behind in logs and junk. Nothing problematic as far as I know. The wii does this with all channels. The only issue would be if Nintendo checks for that stuff when you send a wii in for repairs. I don't know if they do or not.
If you ever decide to mod again don't install Cioses. It'll make your life much easier. You don't really need them for much anyway now and they're kind of a hacked together mess best I can tell.firstmarker wrote:At the end of the day, it seems like backtracking out of the softmod is even more complicated than the softmod itself.
