It's nice that he brought you into the retro gaming world, but I credit myself becoming a retro gamer to never having thrown out my old consoles from the 80s and to the passage of time. I never tried to be retro, I just kept playing the same kinds of games I've always loved.
I will say though that I first discovered AVGN because of his NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles review and I felt validated by how frustrated he got at that game, especially the point about the hole that you have to walk over because jumping will not work. I laughed really hard at that episode and watched a bit more of his videos, but it's a lot of the same schtick, so I got bored with him. Keith Apicary, on the other hand, that guy's awesome.
How has James Rolf (aka AVGN) influenced you as a gamer?

I agree with this, and I don't think many people take this into consideration. He's just kind of fucking around in the videos. In a way, his reviews are like a non-"core" gamer's take on awkwardly designed games of the past.BurningDoom wrote:I don't take any of it seriously because a lot of games he says are bad, are actually pretty good. yeah that's totally different.J T wrote:Keith Apicary, on the other hand, that guy's awesome.
AVGN is someone meant to be laughed at. Whereas Keith, we laugh with him. He's one of us, and we see ourselves in him in a totally caricatured way.

I've got to be the only guy on this site that doesn't enjoy Keith. I've nothing against the guy or anything, I just don't get a laugh out of Talking Classics.

how old are you? I'm genuinely curious if this matters in the equation.BurningDoom wrote:I've got to be the only guy on this site that doesn't enjoy Keith. I've nothing against the guy or anything, I just don't get a laugh out of Talking Classics.

Some of the stuff provokes a chuckle. I didn't care for the Virtual Boy one (music is catchy tho), but I did chuckle at the Dreamcast 2 song. @noise: I'm 25, if that helps you at all.noiseredux wrote:yeah that's totally different.J T wrote:Keith Apicary, on the other hand, that guy's awesome.

Well James Rolfe hasn't influenced me as a gamer, I do find some of his videos pretty funny. I don't care for toilet humor in the slightest, and find that aspect of the videos rather grating, but I think the more humorous part of the AVGN character is the over-analysis of the games and exaggerated reactions.
His reviews generally aren't serious reviews which he expects people to take at face-value. They're intentionally biased for the sake of entertainment. As a videographer, I respect the time and effort he puts into some of his videos.
