How has James Rolf (aka AVGN) influenced you as a gamer?

Edit: Apparently, I was thinking of another angry video game nerd. His Street Fighter 2010 review wasn't terrible.

Wha!? Okay, I'll bite: Please cite your source. ANY source.Retrogamer0001 wrote:Really? Not even the slightest bit? It was my understanding that he is largely credited with reviving old school gaming among the mainstream audience.
Hot Topic has had more to do with reviving retro than James "The F-bomb is my only joke" Rolfe.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

AVGN gives me entertainment at times. But nothing more. I don't take any of it seriously because a lot of games he says are bad, are actually pretty good. I don't think he takes his reviews seriously, or at least I hope he doesn't.
However, I prefer The Irate Gamer. Not as many poop and fart jokes, which get old pretty quick with AVGN.

How has Sylvester Stallone (Rocky) influenced you at a Boxer?
Retrogamer0001, I don't think he is credited with reviving retro gaming., I think he is credited with seeing a trend and creating a character to capitalize on it.

It seems a lot of people on this website don't like him. I think a lot of his shows can be funny, specially when he is mad about something and you remember also being mad at the same thing. The TMNT nes video brought back a lot of memories about how frustrating that game was.
But no matter what anyone on here says his collection is pretty good and dispite his complaints he really loves retro video games, even the ones he complains about.
I don't care for the foul language, but find some of the fun facts and coincedenses he mentions about games entertaining. The Mario Bros. 3 is a good example of that and the Bugs Bunny Crazy Castles episodes.
I wouldn't say he made me a retro gamer but he did make me a little nostalgic for games and systems I never even had, which doesn't make much since.
For those of you who don't like AVGN, his show BoardJames is pretty fun, its pretty much like him being a kid and enjoying the board games of his childhood and no over the top cussing. I also really like His Monster Madness series which got me into a lot of Horror films I missed, I recommend the Godzilla ones as there are a lot of interesting tid bits he mentions.

I've found Zelda shirts at Hot Topic for $5. That's done way for me as a gamer than AVGN ever has.
Unless you guys want to pay me for saying "Lost Levels is really hard WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?!?!" Then I'll take yr money and say AVGN influenced me big time.

You'll bite what? I said it was my understanding, though in your opinion, I'm wrong. Whatever. Regardless, whether he "capitalized" on a trend or not, I don't think there is any denying the fact that he has a massive following amongst retro gamers. Even racketboy just recently had a video about him. Seriously, if I had known there would be this much hate about a pretty innocent question, I never would have posted - which certainly doesn't say much for the retro community.Flake wrote:Wha!? Saying 'It is my understanding' implies that there was something you...you know...understood. I just wanted to know what it was.
Hey, retro gamers are allowed to hate just like anyone else. Rolfe has a good thing going for him but no one has voiced a complaint about him that doesn't have some merit: His fanbase is annoying, he's a one trick pony, and his language is so vulgar that it detracts from his performances.
If you want everyone to agree with you...just preface your first post that way. We thought you wanted our actual opinions.

Re: How has James Rolf (aka AVGN) influenced you as a gamer?
You got to understand this is a retro gaming site and he makes fun of retro games. So I can understand a lot of the dislike on this forum. And seeing copycat reviewers makes it worse. I am not afraid to admit I like his videos, and even though he might not be the biggest influence I am sure a lot of people got into retro gaming because of his videos. When I was working at Gamestop and a play n trade a lot of kids would mention they started playing games before their time because they never heard of them before AVGN and thought they looked cool despite his rants.Retrogamer0001 wrote:You'll bite what? You got to admit its awesome to see a young kid who wants an NES instead of a XB360 and seeing them play an NES for the first time puts tears in my eyes, even if it was because of his influence. By the way parents really shouldn't let kids watch his show, but whatever.
