This is sort of weird thing to get excited about, but I think there is something to be said for a great user interface in a game. What are some of your favorites?
Lately I've been playing Dead Space, which is what got me to make this topic. I love how there is no HUD overlaying on top of the screen, but instead it is built into Isaac's suit. His health level is measured by glowing lights along his spinal column, when he gets video messages, they project out of his suit rather than cutting away and taking control away from the player, and the menu system for your inventory and map is also represented by holographic projections from the suit. It's just so cool the way it makes the menu system blend right isolated and high tech atmosphere of the Starship Ishimura.
The other games that stand out to me for having excellent menu systems are Persona 3 and Persona 4. The menus slide in and out in angular patterns or bubble shapes. It's so stylized that it just added to the overall cool factor of these games.

The small bit I've played of Persona 4 I'll have to agree with you regarding the awesome menus.J T wrote:This is sort of weird thing to get excited about, but I think there is something to be said for a great user interface in a game. What are some of your favorites?

Pokemon's have usually been good too, mainly for simplicity.
With HUDs, usually the most inconspicuous ones are the best. Health, armor, ammo, minimap for multiplayer. If I take notice of the HUD, it's usually because I have problems with it.
