Beginning my collection. . .

Post by Kwixotik »

I wasn't sure which board I should post this topic in, but, after seeing the posts here, I feel this is the most appropriate one. I apologize if it's not. I'm basically trying to use this thread as a "project log" of sorts as my collection develops (pictures included, hence why I chose to post in this board. Please move it if it doesn't fit). So, let's start at the beginning.

I plan to focus initially on SNES and N64 games as they were the systems I played primarily when I was younger. As that collection grows, I plan on expanding to NES, PS1, and beyond. The first purchase I made with the intent of collecting was a couple months ago. I bought Banjo Kazooie, Wetrix, Buck Bumble, Blast Corps, Star Wars Episode I Racer, and Space Station Silicon Valley for about $24 total. Then today, while searching my house for my old games, I had a vague memory that my parents had put all of my old games in their rented storage building. So, after doing a bit of investigation, this is what I came up with. . .

1x beautifully non-discolored original SNES
2x Nintendo SNES controllers
and a lot of cartridges that looked like this:
[insert image of SNES cartridges with nasty orange gunk caked all over the bottom with hair and dust trapped in it. my phone is taking forever to send the images, so I'll add them later]

Pretty nasty, right? Well, I cleaned everything up pretty well and this is what I came up with to start my collection. All of them except the ones I mentioned that I bought a couple months ago are leftovers from my childhood.

My cat wanted to present the N64 games, so I let him, haha.

And two potentially unsalvageable games. . . We'll see. If you have any tips for removing the stickers and residue of the Zelda label or getting the orange gunk off the Mario Kart label, let me know.

To do list:
1. Remove stickers and clean cartridge connectors (any tips on removing stickers from labels?)
2. Clean around console connectors. (is iso alcohol okay?)
3. Test games
4. Perform surgery on SNES game batteries
5. Get my modest collection a good set-up so I can post some actual game room stuff on here.
6. Expand collection (obviously)
7. (?) Universal game cases and custom covers?

It's a start, lol. Least you have X3 as that one is a little hard to come by, but X2 can be as well sometimes.

Reminds me I need to pickup those Star Wars games myself for the SNES.

A nice start, love the cat. I thought at first the cat name was from the Anime/Game Code Lyoko.

Look for the Guides section in the Board Index, there is a Sticker Cleaning Guide there.

Make sure to set aside a little money to have your SNES batteries replaced. It's pretty easy to do (or have someone around here do for cheap) and will give your SNES collection another 10 years of life.

Any plans to expand past the SNES and N64?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Yeah, I plan on expanding past them, but I wanted a smaller scale goal first, so I have some kind of focus. Do the SNES games that use passwords rather than saves need their batteries replaced?

Notes on my to-do list:

Confirmed that every game is working. Cleaned all games (they're all working on the first try now ) and removed the easy-to-remove stickers. Also removed the sticker on top of X3. It has a plastic layer over a very strong silver sticker and left behind a lot of residue... I'm going to work on getting that off later tonight. It also has a large yellowed sticker across the back label. I started taking it off, but it was leaving an ugly yellow residue. That, or it caused discoloration on the back. It's hard to tell, but I'm afraid to go any further with it, so I'll leave it alone for now. Also removed the sticker on the label of DKC3 with relative ease, not much left behind.

Picked up Jet Force Gemini (N64) for $4 today and an $8 soldering kit to replace SNES batteries.

Nice! Is the soldering kit sold $8 new or was this some deal you found?
