32x

Post by Jipi Man »

Hi !

I recently bought a 32x for my genesis 2 and I have some issues with it. I actually bought it to remove those vertical lines on my HD tv and it worked for that. The problem is that the games crashes at some point. I don't have 32x games and the 2 genesis games that I have (Thunder Force 2, Pier Solar) will crash mostly when there is a transition or will have graphical glitches. I have cleaned the pins of the cartridges with rubbing alcohol, cleaned the slots by putting a cartridge with alcohol on it and I also opened the 32x and reconnect the ribbons as shown on : http://www.sonic-cult.org/articles/32x/

I have all the cables and everything seems in good shape.
What can I do?

Try this out for size, especially if you scroll down past "Hooking up the Unit" There will be a guide for opening and checking to see if the two ribbon cables inside are clean or actually connected. Usually this clears up most of the working problems. Otherwise, I hate to say this, it could be an irreparable problem.

In that case if you have all the needed cables for the 32x (which you should have in the first place  ) then spare standalone units aren't too hard to come by, to replace yours.

I had to try reconnecting the ribbon cables more than once before mine finally stopped giving me problems. They can be really fiddly and still not be in there properly when it looks like they are. Otherwise, I don't know, since that was what fixed mine.

The 32X is a finicky add-on. I've had 32X games refuse to play a game (mainly Chaotix) simply because it didn't like one particular Genesis system. In other words, it would play perfect on one Genesis, but mess up/glitch on another. Weird yes, but that's my experience with it (and yes, I've cleaned the hell out of them and re-adjusted the ribbon cables, the mushroom just doesn't grow on one of my consoles).

I once successfully hooked up a 32X using individual (shieled/coated) wires. I was actually amazed it worked.
I have since found replacement cables and am a happy Sega gamer.

I already reconnected the ribbons two times without a really big difference. Maybe it's from the Gen2.

Yeah, nobody seems to take me serious when I suggest trying a different Genesis. Both of my Genesis units are model 2's, one working perfectly and the other having trouble with certain games. I've never had a problem with plain Genesis games on the problem unit (w/32X attached), but then I usually took it off when not actively using it for the 32X.

But again, try getting another Genesis system and see what happens. If your like me, you'll find a lot grouped with some games you wanted anyways for a good price.

Good luck!

Of course, it might be cheaper to try a different 32X unit first--especially if you buy one without the cables. I've seen them for single-digit prices.

Where have you seen them? I live in Canada and it genrealy goes for 40 to 50 bucks with shiping on ebay.

Mostly local game shops down here in Texas. I know a place that was selling a few untested for $5 USD not long ago. Sometimes you can find a lucky deal on eBay though. I got one incomplete but mint in opened box for $10 USD a couple years ago. Seller had raided the box for the Genesis 1 connector parts and didn't need the rest...

If you want, I could check that shop for you and see if they still have any, but I don't know how much shipping to Canada would be.

It finally works !

I went to my local retrogame shop and I exchanged my Gen2 unit for another one.
Quite chockingly, this gen2 dosen't put those ugly blue vertical lines, wich was my primary purpose to get a 32x ironicly.
So I guess now I just have to buy actual 32x games :P
