Genre Guides?/Quick genre-introducing idea

Post by dogman91 »

Any news on (the new) Racketboy genre guides? I would love something like that as websites like this made me completely obsessed with video games, and I'm quite new to gaming as a whole. Everything else has been incredibly helpful and inspiring... drained all my money because of this site by the way. 8)

...and to follow that, I want to express an idea I have for introducing games of a certain genre. Basically, a rapid-fire quick-listing of games that are the starters of a genre, the "classic", and then the latest innovations; one or two games max for each.

For example, basing the choices off the Survival Horror guide:

The Retro: Sweet Home/Alone in the Dark
The Classic: Resident Evil
The Latest: Dead Space

BTW, new to the forums; been a very long-time lurker of the site! Glad to finally register... :D

This isn't a bad idea and could definitely be useful to those new to games as well as those of us who have been playing since we were old enough to hold a controller. I've been playing games my whole life but really stuck to platforming, adventure, and rpgs. I didn't start getting into shmups until last year and recently went out and picked up blazblue continuum shift, my first fighting game (which I've really been enjoying, but dang those advanced combos are tricky to pull off). Anyways I would love to see some "games that defined [insert genre here]" lists that aren't platform specific, or maybe games that serve as great introductions to their respective genre.

Welcome, always great to get new members!

Even the Honorable Mentions at that Survivor Horror Guide has a couple of sentences describing each game. I prefer a review, even if just few sentences. Just have a list of favorites doesn't help. I end up doing a copy and paste of the listed game title into Google just to find out what a game is about. Maybe a reviewer could include what is interpreted as a Retro, Classic and Latest game followed by a short review of each.

Hey chief, glad you liked my guide. Have you read the survival horror 101? It was the first of the genre 101s, so it's a bit different from the following ones, but it has some solid information on the genre's history. In the later genre 101s, Gamerforlife included several lists like what you mentioned. I just figured for the genre defining articles I'd actually explain a bit about why these games define the genre as opposed to just listing a few.

I've been mulling about a survival horror hidden gems article, but it hasn't gotten anywhere just yet.

Well you know me Ack and others here from what I've seen, it's definitely an awesome genre some of us older fans really appreciate. In fact going back to that recent "How'd you find Racketboy.com?" thread, I think it might have even been one of those guides that led me here.

If I can get a VGA cable for my Dreamcast I'm definitely going to have to check out a lot of the ones on that system, I still have plenty to check out in some old survival horror rec thread I made awhile back.

Another interesting guide idea might be one for the FPS/RPG hybrid games. Ultima Underworld 1-2, System Shock 1-2, Arx Fatalis (still need to check this one out myself), Deus Ex, etc. Dunno what it is about these games, but I absolutely can't get enough of them. Just simply having inventories of other stuff than guns in an FPS is really awesome to me, haha.

I have been working on a guide to serve as introduction to musical games but I'm having format issues. For 6 games I'm taking as much space as Racketboy's genre guides. I don't like that result.
