Anyone else think the current gen mainstream games are stale

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

One thing that bugs me is how blatant modern games are getting about copying eachother these days. I remember when Capcom sued a company years ago for making a game that was too similar to Street Figher II. That sort of thing just doesn't happen today. You can pretty much copy something from another game down to the last detail today and nobody really even takes notice and I'm seeing a lot of that these days
I feel like mentioning Bayonetta in the last paragraph of that article kind of kills the whole point of it a bit. I like Bayonetta, but aside from its female lead, it wasn't really original. It was a DMC clone, one of, if not THE best. However, there's a thousand DMC clones out there. Plus, it rode the quick time event bandwagon like practically every other action game on the market. It's really just another symptom of the industry simply churning out the same stuff all the time, which is what the article is supposedly complaining about. The games she mentioned for the PS 1 are a much better example of games that really innovated(Parappa the Rapper, Tomb Raider, Mr. Mousquito)

But the "industry" churning out stale clones isn't really new. You mentioned SF, there were tons of SF clones being made in the early 90's. The same is true with Castlevania, tons of games tried to copy it.Gamerforlife wrote:One thing that bugs me is how blatant modern games are getting about copying eachother these days. I just mean that a lot of games are copying so very closely now that is borders on the gaming equivalent of plagiarism. A lot of games copied SF, but one did it so closely that Capcom took legal action. I don't remember the name of the game though. It's different today, you can copy something as closely as you want and get away with it. There doesn't seem to really be a fine line anymore.saturnfan wrote:But the "industry" churning out stale clones isn't really new. Not long ago, the creators of 'Splosion Man complained about Capcom making a game called Maxplosion that completely ripped off their game and there was nothing they could do about it. Capcom's Sengoku Basara games are pretty much complete ripoffs of Koei's Samurai Warriors games and then you have Darksiders....just look at these two videos
We've gone from an industry of borrowing ideas to just out and out ripping games off and I don't really like it

Gamerforlife's still just pissed about Darksiders.
(which I won't argue against since I didn't care for it at all either!)
There is so much wrong with the state of modern gaming, it's all gone too "mainstream", etc that I've probably already written novels about it throughout the board so I'll just refrain myself from exploding on this thread. "Too mainstream" is the key though for me. It was a different world in the 90's, one that has passed forever but at least I was there. There will still always be great games and worthy innovations, but they will continue to be harder and harder to find from here on.

You make a very good point. Though I would like to point out that Shadow of the Colossus is not the first to have an underground worm (Skip to about 1:00 in the video).Gamerforlife wrote:

The games industry just seems to go in cycles. When Space Invaders was big, there were tons of clones and space shmups. Racing games, one on one fighters, platformers, light gun games, fps, rhythm games. All have had periods in arcades or home releases where it seems half or more of the games being released are in one style or genre.

That's not even mentioning all the pong clones that caused an industry crash in the 70s...Hobie-wan wrote:Fighters's HistoryGamerforlife wrote:I just mean that a lot of games are copying so very closely now that is borders on the gaming equivalent of plagiarism. Anyone else never really put A and B together and consider two games as clones? Like when people say every FPS is trying to be CoD now, I dont see what they mean. Is that something you see after playing alot of newer games or am I that naive.
