To me, the earlier uses of tech were driven by software. For example, the standard analog control on the N64, while not the first use on a console, or even at the time (neGcon and dual flightstick for PSX, 3D pad for Saturn),

The 64 controller came out before the 3D pad on the Saturn. The dual flightsticks were too niche; the Vectex had an analog joystick as well but no one thinks of the Vectrex when they think of analog pioneers.

Actually, most people don't think of the Vetrex, period.

The N64's inclusion of the analog stick is sort of like Columbus discovering America. Yeah Columbus wasn't the first, yeah people in Europe probably had some degree of knowledge of the Western Hemisphere, but Columbus' discovery was the most important, as it was the one that stuck, and ushered in all the change that came with discovering America. So is the N64 stick, it might have not technically been the first, but it was the most important, at it was the catalyst that ushered in analog stick movement as the standard in a 3D world.
