Yes, but trust me, it's much better that way.
It isn't easier. The only difference in the difficulty is that a normal mode has been added, whereas in Dante's awakening the normal mode was actually the hard mode. The normal mode or hard mode aren't that tough anyway, Dante must die is the one where it gets challenging.

In addition to normal mode being hard mode, Dante's Awakening had no checkpoints. This was the really brutal part. Had to start the level over from the beginning at every death.

Yes it does. Select "yellow" when you start a new game.
True players don't use yellow mode. It doesn't really make a difference anyway, because you can buy the yellow orbs in both versions to get a checkpoint.
