I tried out the SNES version and had trouble with the first level. Any recommendations on load-out and whatnot?

If this is your first time, I recommend trying it on easy first, which you can change in options. As for which weapons to choose, I personally would recommend 1-1-1-3-2-5 (missile, vertical, twin laser, f. option, force field, mega crush). I know many prefer reduce instead of force field though...

Off the bat, I do two speedups, then vertical, but then switch to lasers after the fourth f. option. Also, in options, you can change which buttons correspond to what. Some, including me, find it easier to manually control missiles rather than assigning them to the same button as regular fire.

How do you choose what to use your power up on? It seems like it chooses for me.

Each power-up you pick up moves the selector along the bar at the bottom. You have to have the right number of power-ups to activate the weapon you want. If you let it go too long, the selector will wrap around to the beginning, so keep an eye on it.

Did you turn on "automatic powerups" in the options menu? If that's turned on, turn it off. Although generally I find that while I do things differently, it does do a good job of picking the right ones.

Is anyone still playing Gradius III besides Stark and I? I wonder if there's a difficulty correlation between the PS2 and SNES versions. For example, I read that the PS2 version has 6 difficulties while the SNES has 2. So, does "normal" or "hard" on the SNES compare at all to one of the PS2 difficulties? If I play "easiest" on the PS2 version, will that be easier than "easy" on the SNES version?

Huh?

PS2 = Gradius III arcade
SNES = Practically a completely different game

No matter what, Gradius III arcade is way harder.

I actually played a little earlier to test my PSP on my component/VGA box. I did find it a lot easier to graze bullets when the screen was blown up to 23" haha. But yeah, still hard. Still can't beat the 2nd level.

That.....doesn't make sense. Being a different game doesn't mean that the easiest difficulty is automatically more difficult than the hardest difficulty of another game... If it is harder, then great, it's harder. But saying they're different games doesn't have to do with it.... :|
