The 6 Most Ominous Trends in Video Games
Re: The 6 Most Ominous Trends in Video Games
I'm no stranger to art-house cinema, but with games budget is a critical factor. Still, some indie games can be rather fascinating.

I hear there's this thing, called the PC, where anyone can program for without having to pay licensing fees.[/quote]MrPopo wrote:But that's why there's indie/art house movies, and same with music and games, in order to rescue us from corporate blandness. Now if only there were an indie console to play indie games on...

Not just precompiled games, but also flash games, too. I know a lot of "gamers" don't like casual games, but I think some really rock, like Canabalt, Robot Unicorn Attack, Amorphous+, not to mention the many various mildly entertaining games on Kongregate, Addicting Games, or other flash gaming sites.

I love that site, great stuff. As long as I can still use a joypad, I'm up for PC gaming. I know this may sound ridiculous to some, but I can't stand controlling games with a keyboard for the most part, it just feels plain unnatural.

I'm right there with you on that. I *hate* keyboard. Hell, when I played Tomb Raider: Guardian of Light on Steam, I preferred my N64 controller over the keyboard. If I have to use a keyboard, I will, but for most of the games I download and play on my laptop, I only use a controller. I'd play a lot less games if I didn't have these USB adapters for SNES, Playstation, and N64.NeverGoBak wrote:I know this may sound ridiculous to some, but I can't stand controlling games with a keyboard for the most part, it just feels plain unnatural.

I don't mind using a keyboard, but that's more than likely because I was pretty much raised by pc gaming in the late 80s/early 90s.

Was great for point and click adventure games. Otherwise I was a console kid.brunoafh wrote:I don't mind using a keyboard, but that's more than likely because I was pretty much raised by pc gaming in the late 80s/early 90s.

I'm kind of backwards, lol. I was into emulation way before the days of USB and never had joysticks or anything, so I grew up emulating a ton of games playing them with the keyboard. I think I even mastered it enough to do speedruns on Super Metroid for awhile.
Nowadays though I prefer to do 99% of my emulation with controllers, usually I stick to a PS2 controller with one of my adapters, or sometimes my wired 360 controller. This has also taught me to grow out of save stating, seriously, I was an addict and now I almost outright refuse to use them entirely.
I also grew up with consoles too... but uh, I don't even know where I'm going with this. I have my preferences but can do both. It's just like my argument against people taking sides for FPS's or whatnot, for me it's not the control/setup that matters, it's the game itself and the "feel". Entirely subjective, but for instance Halo feels better to me on a controller, and Half-Life 1-2 feel better on the keyboard/mouse, etc.
