Feelings about the latest episode of South Park

Post by emwearz »

I am long time fan of South Park, but after watching the latest episode (You're Getting Old), I just felt sort of sad for Matt and Trey, they have obviously outgrown the style of comedy the show is known for but because of contracts cant end the show.

There was tones of symbolism in the episode, such as Randy trying to reclaim his youth even though he wasn't appealing to the older or younger crowd and just not understanding what the younger generation is wanting.

If you asked me last week how I would feel about South Park ending I would have been gutted a show that I love so much was ending, but after this episode, I will be happy just knowing those two guys are free to try new things and move on from something they obviously no longer enjoy making.

Discuss?

the ending of that episode felt incomplete assuming part 2 next week. towards the end of that episode I felt sadness for Stan. I got get the latest Metallica album and add shit noises, for a friendly prank. i don't like when good cartoons go cancelled. Same thing goes for Kevin Smith

Well it wont be next week because its the end of the first half-season, so there is a break before the next half-season starts.

The show is not cancelled, its the opposite, they want to end up, but due to contracts cant, or at least its the feeling the episode gives out. Point of my post.

I had considered making a topic about this as it made me really start thinking about the show, and Matt & Trey, as a whole too. I've been a South Park fan pretty much my entire life (since the very first season was airing) and seeing this ep was a bit of a shocker. I think it's obvious now more than ever that they want to end the show. As far as I know it's only a rumor that the show has been extended to 2013 at this point, and after "You're Getting Old" I'm beginning to have my doubts about it, being that it's still unconfirmed.

I'm sure they're tired of a lot of the negative reception these new seasons (starting at season 11 it seems) have been garnering, and just tired of doing the show period. The scene with Randy and Sharon talking about how "it's just the same shit every week but more ridiculous" juxtaposed with the guys are breaking in the house to steal the birches attests to this. Perhaps another bit of symbolism the episode was trying to convey was that the fans are getting old and are no longer finding the show as funny as it used to be, since was Matt & Trey are doing with the episodes isn't ultimately that different from what they've always been doing, but the reception has now begun to turn sour.

It's tough to make any calls until we see what they do in October when the next ep airs, but honestly I wouldn't mind them ending the show now, before they've completely exhausted themselves and the quality of the show goes off the deep end all together.

I hate seeing a show stay on the air just for the sake of staying on the air. I mean does anyone really care about the Simpsons anymore or even Family Guy?. That's what South Park is turning into. Hopefully Futurama won't continue to stick around when it reaches a point that it's not funny anymore.

I care about both. They still make me laugh, even if they aren't as good as they were in their heyday. And I think South Park has had some of it's best episodes in the recent seasons. I'll be disappointed when South Park ends (as it seems that's what's going to happen) but if it isn't a fun show for them to do anymore then I agree with their decision to stop. But if the only reason they want to stop is some perception that people don't find them funny anymore then that's just bollocks.

Yeah that was the first time a South Park episode actually left me feeling depressed. And I also felt I could kind of relate to Stan in that I too am finding everything around me to sound and look like shit. Movies, music...video games. It's a part of getting older, you realize what's bullshit.

The episode definitely had a sort of series finale vibe to it. I wouldn't blame Trey and Matt if they did decide to leave. After all they created the Book of Morman for Broadway - they obviously are interested in doing other things.

I honestly don't think Trey and Matt will ever "outgrow" any kind of comedy. That's what makes them so great. They will throw an episode out there with completely childish jokes, or completely absurd topics, just because it is so absurd. A lot of times they use the absurdity to make an analogy, but sometimes they use it to just be absurd.

I understand that it's possible they are getting tired of the show, but I don't think that was the main point of the show. I'm sure they have heard a lot of their critics say that it's the same shit over and over. Hell, they will probably even admit that it feels like it at times. But honestly, what shows aren't like that (with the exception of Game of Thrones, the greatest show ever)? They aren't afraid to poke fun at themselves, and I honestly don't believe that they care a whole lot about what random internet people (not just us, I mean in general) say about their show. It's their show. They've never tried to please fans, just make a show that they thought was funny.

The underlying theme of the episode applies to basically everyone, at some level. And the more extreme can relate to Stan. A lot of people probably see Trey and Matt as Stan, since they often mock everything. I'm sure they see the absurdity in the real world, and probably even get angry/frustrated, but they always seem to find the humor in any situation. So while they might have been poking fun at themselves, they were also creating a parody of what many people experience in some way.

I love South Park, but when Trey and Matt want to hang it up, I will fully support them. And they won't keep the show going, just to please the fans. As far as contracts go, I have no idea, I've never read their contracts. But I would imagine that when they are truly finished, the show will be over.

But you're right, when South Park is over, they will continue to work on other projects, and I'm sure those will be enjoyable as well.

Yup.

Trey and Matt actually don't want to hang 'em up, they're just playing ball. The Book of Mormon has already been praised with I think about 14 Tony nominations, and don't be surprised if they are looking for some extra scratch.

List of awards.

They won 9, including Best Musical (which I called immediately after seeing it).
