Non-Gamers Say The Darndest Things

Post by MrEco »

So just out of curiosity, what are the most annoying things you've heard a non-gamer say or seen them do?

Many, many times while playing in front of family I would get asked the question "Are you playing now?" when it's quite clearly a cutscene. Yes, I'm playing so hard that the camera is moving around cinematically just like in a movie, doing closeups on the faces of characters and occasionally panning out to see some wide vista. And despite not being able to focus on the character I'm playing I'm still able to manipulate their entire bodies and even make them have a conversation. I do it using my mind ya' know. God these games are advanced nowadays.

But seriously, it gets even more annoying after I inevitably answer "Well, no..." and get the response "Oh great, can you get up and do something for me?" :|

"do that again." during a cutscene.

most of the laughable things are said during cutscenes, i've found. my girlfriend constantly makes fun of any game that has japanese voices in it, too. which is kinda cute.

I get weird looks if anyone sees me playing a game with Japanese voices.

"Why are you playing that if you can't understand what they're saying?"

I dunno. Maybe it has something to do with the English subtitles on the screen?

i get a similar question with most of the music that i listen to.

"what's he so mad about? what's all that yelling?"

Without fail my girlfriend will always say "Those graphics are not very good" if I am playing anything but a cutting edge FPS.

My mum/step-dad always ask ' what level are you on?' or 'are you winning?' even when I'm playing a game like Animal Crossing. I give them the benefit of a doubt though, because they don't like video games much, but at least now and again they try to feign an interest.

Mine may not be the Darndest, in fact it is the stupidest thing, and it came from a "gamer". A few years ago I was waiting in line for a game convention to open. In case anyone cares it was TooManyGames. I was 6th in line and there were a couple young people in the group in front of me. Those who had preregistered were supposed to be allowed in an hour before the others. Right about the time the doors were supposed to open there was a decent line headed down the sidewalk and a family of Mom, Dad, and a couple young kids comes walking by and tries to go in the door. One of the people in front of me commented that it wasn't open yet. One of the parents said that they though the preregistered people got in first. They were then told that the line WAS the preregistered people. They were very polite and said, "Sorry", and went to the back of the line.

One of the young guys in front of me commented, "I guess you didn't think we would be hard core enough to get here early. I was rockin' out to Mario 3 before you were born." That comment just made my day. I knew that that I was in the presence of a true GAMER.
