So I was looking on Craigslist and have the option of buying a xbox an actual modchip and a 180gb hdd, or a softmodded xbox with a 250gb hdd. Can you still use xbox live if you have a modchip? how about if you softmod?

Many mods have the option of temporarily turning the mod "off" so that it is no longer functioning, allowing you to use Live.

True enough, but doesn't the larger HD prevent Live use as well?

How can I tell if a modded xbox is softmodded or has a modchip. I another person selling a modded xbox, I initially contacted him and he wasn't sure if it was softmodded or with a modchip since he got it from a friend. I asked him to ask his friend, and he replied that it had a mod chip in it. I'd like to believe him, but I feel like there is the possibility he told me that because he knew I wanted to hear it.

I don't know much about either, but between the two I guess I'd rather have the mod chip in it. Is there any way to tell externally which it is? It has a 250gb harddrive, so i imagine he has some games and maybe emulators on there. If I am able to test the xbox, how will I be able to tell in the boot up. Is there a difference in the software that is used, the menus?

Well since it now has a 250gb hd it would have had to have been opened right?
