Yeah I forgot to mention it in my last post. I don't intend to ever sell my games. I just collect and try to have the best games for that particular system. Theres no point collecting every game for a system if your never gonna play them cos they're rubbish.peace4myheart wrote:I can understand why you would think that. However, I am just saying that I don't actually care for making monies off of games. I do have a collector's mentality and do try my best to take good care of my games. However, I never have the intention of saving them up to sell them off later, although I did sell off a third of my collection to pay for school a couple of years back.molotovwars wrote:peace4myheart, so uh, since you don't care about the monies, i'll trade you my MGS 3: subsistence for your LE? eh eh how about it?

Seems like Disgaea 2 is decreasing in value ever since it was release, maybe because the game was just more of the same and also because NIS seems to release more copies than company like Atlus. As for the original Disgaea released by Atlus, it was valuable and may still be, but it is also losing value quickly due to NIS rereleasing it and porting it over to PSP and DS.kgcarini wrote:I bet Disagea, Disagea 2, and almost anything produced by NIS will become more valuable. I managed to Disagea 2 for $15 new at circuit city in October and loved it. I beat it and wanted to get the first one until I found out it goes for about $50 used.
La Pucelle Tactics is also not doing so well in terms of price, though I don't believe the game is very common. Meanwhile, some of their other titles, like GrimGrimoire and Soul Nomad, seem to be taking dives in terms of value. Then again, it might only be because people are upgrading to the PS3 and selling their PS2 games, thus causing a lot to be on the market and driving down the price. After all, I knew a few guys who speculated that the Nippon Ichi games would be some of the most expensive PS2 games later on...perhaps a lot of folks thought this, and are trying to cash in on it?peace4myheart wrote:Seems like Disgaea 2 is decreasing in value ever since it was release, maybe because the game was just more of the same and also because NIS seems to release more copies than company like Atlus. Personally I'm glad that most PS2 games are affordable, that way I can actually buy legit copies and play the game without feeling like I'm ruining a colectible.
The limited realease games are where it's at for collectors on almost any platform. Look at all those Sega Cd and Saturn Working Design releases, pretty much the most valuble US released games on those systems.
It's seems different for Sony. Even some of the games with more limited releases aren't worth alot. It's like demand is what drives up the price more than rarity on most PSX and PS2 games because most titles for Sony's systems had pretty decent distibution. Final Fantasy 7 is a real good example and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is another. Not rare games, just in demand.

Yeah, I'm buying as many PS2 games as I can right (or at least of the ones I want), because the prices are just so good. Paying $5-7 for games like Viewtiful Joe, Zone of Enders, MGS Series, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy Series, Killer 7, plus games like Shadow of the Colossus and God of War for not much more than that. I've also found out about a lot great games for PS2 through racketboy, there are just so many games available and many of them that get overlooked.
I always collected Genesis and Dreamcast, but now I'm really shifting to PS2, if some of them become rare cool, but I've always been somewhat of a budget buyer...though my collecting habits do get the best of me from time to time. Thanks for all the input so far, this thread is turning out to be quite interesting.

One of my most disappointed purchase due to depreciation was Final Fantasy XII LE. I bought it for 60 bucks on preorder and six months later, it went down to 50, then a year later it went down to 30 and then now some places sell it for 20 dollars. I am pissed because I didn't even finished the game cuz I got bored after a couple of days. I could have just waited a year latger and buy it and it wouldn't make a difference in my enjoyment.

That's a tough call. On one hand, people who are into Guitar Heroes and Rock Band might want to go back to seek older title for their casual gaming crave. On the other hand, those that are into Guitar Heroes and Rock Band want new versions of each games to play and not anything else.kgcarini wrote:I wonder if the early rhythum games like Amplitude and Frequency will increase in value.
BTW, just in case anyone is interested in those games, both play similarly to Guitar Heroes, just without the guitar.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

Didn't comics crash in value in much the same way as baseball cards did? I remember reading about people started buying unopened comics purely for the sake of reselling them later. Eventually everyone realized there was no market and the bottom dropped out. I think it was more complex than that, but a lot of people got stuck with comics they just hoped to resell and didn't want for their own merit.
I really only buy games that I would like having, not ones that I think are valuable. I think it's cool to have a nice collection for posterity. Although recently I've been thinking about my collecting habits.
When I was younger I had far fewer games and enjoyed them greatly. Now I have many more games but don't get the same amount of pleasure from them. I there are several reasons: other priorities demanding my attention, that I've played some genre's to death (Ralph Koster's book, A Theory of Fun has an interesting discussion about how games stop being fun when our brains are no longer challenged,) and that I just don't have the time to indulge myself.
I've been wondering if the rampant materialism of being a collector can suck the fun out of a hobby. If there comes a point when it's more about the complete sets of stacks of alphabetically categorized games sitting in a row then the actual joy of playing. It's like building a huge library of expensive books and leaving behind the joy of reading a dog-eared copy of the Iliad. Buying that copy of Radiant Silvergun might be like the man who acquires a famous piece of art for his living room not because he aches to see it's beauty but rather that visitors admire it and recognize his wealth.
I plan to keep collecting stuff, but it does give me pause. I've got gigs of stuff from UG that I've never even touched.
