PAL N64

Post by itsmattxp »

What are the differences in a PAL n64 and a NTSC n64? I have both but have no idea if I should plug in the PAL n64 into the power outlet since the plug is difference and I'm debating whether or not its going to explode if I do. Also are PAL n64s pretty much the same as the NTSC n64 other than the cartridge being different? Such as if I were to take the case off and put a NTSC game into the PAL n64, it would still play perfect?

Don't plug it in! Different voltage in PAL vs NTSC consoles! The video signal is different too.

Not sure on PAL vs NTSC compatibility on the carts themselves. There is a notch in a different spot on Japan vs USA carts. A simple fix by swapping the back halves.

As said above don't plug it in, you should be able to use your native PSU on both consoles though as it will convert it to whatever your mains use. Though wait for someone with more knowledge to confirm this before doing it.

The carts are different, and you actually cant play PAL on NTSC and vice verse without using a third party device and even then the compatibility is not that high. So really its PAL carts with PAL consoles and NTSC carts with NTSC consoles.

I would stick with the NTSC console and games as they will run at fullscreen (where as most PAL games will have a border) as well as fullspeed (where as most PAL games will actually run 17% slower as well due to 50vs60hz).

Use the NTSC console.

I have both an NTSC and a PAL console so I'm speaking from personal experience.
You can switch the power supplies from one console to another. It's important that you use the power supply compatible with the voltage used in your country, rather than the region of the console. So if you are in Europe always use the European supply no matter which console you're using. Europe uses 220-240V while America/Japan use lower voltages so you need a step-down transformer to use the power supply of the NTSC console. So just switch the power supplies between the consoles depending on which one you're using.
PAL and NTSC games will only run on their corresponding consoles. You can use a bypass device and get most PAL games to run on NTSC (and NTSC on PAL consoles) but the compatibility is not 100%.
However as pointed out you're better off using the NTSC console and buying NTSC games. That way the games run faster. NTSC games tend to be cheaper than PAL anyways (ignoring the cost of shipping naturally) and an NTSC N64 can be modded very easily to run both japanese and american games. If you're lucky it might be even possible to mod your NTSC console to output RBG for the best video quality you can get from an N64.

So:
1. Stick to the NTSC console and NTSC games
2. Switch power supplies to match the voltage used in your country.
3. Mod the NTSC console to play all NTSC games and to output RGB if possible.

Edit: I just realized that "emwearz" already said everything I did...
Mostly harmless

Basically the PAL N64 sucks. Don't even bother. I couldn't believe the difference between my NTSC N64 and my PAL N64. It's like two completely different consoles. Sadly we got the retarded runt of the family.

Edit: Regarding the PSU, you can use your native PSU (IE NTSC PSU on a PAL N64) on any N64. I use my PAL PSU on my NTSC N64 without any issue at all.

Thanks for all the replies, I was wondering if I should have LED modded it but guess its worthless to sell anyways. Don't see any on eBay so I guess no one buys these things.

Yep, you already have the best version of the system. Might as well dump it to the first moron that will buy it.

What's wrong with the PAL N64? Unreliable, poorly constructed, ugly, what is it?

It's perfectly reliable and construction is identical. It's just that it runs 17% slower and has borders. For some reason it also looks blurrier than my NTSC does even using the exact same cables.

Here's all you need to know:

The NTSC hits the wall several seconds before the PAL version.
