No, its just that some work after just cleaning the pins with alcohol, some after doing that and bending them back, and about half no matter what I do they still don't want to work (display same symptoms as before, flashing screen, won't play games).
You won't hurt anything by trying to clean/fix it yourself. Its just that for me I've waisted enough time that it's just worth it to buy one for $10.

Pixelbender, sometimes, it isn't the 72 pin connector. You can cut the pin for region selection (I think it's that pin) and that often fixes problems, too.
If refurbing the 72 pin doesn't work and you don't have a new pin connector to use(or even test the system's functionality with), cutting that pin helps. I cut a few pins back when I was selling them. It does make some games not work with the system, however, so do this at your own risk. There might be a list somewhere of what games is kills.

Atari 2600 (AV mod), NES, SNES (region switch for PAL), Virtual Boy, Gamecube, Wii (D2CKey), PSX (Stealth V), PS2 (independence exploit w/ 160 GB HDD), Goldstar 3DO, Philips CD-i, Dreamcast, Saturn (racketboy's chip), Sega Genesis 2 + CD2 + 32X + Power Base Converter, Game Gear.
Sounds like it'd be really easy to rig up a switch you can flip to connect or disconnect that pin.
What I want to do is rig my NES so that I don't have to push the game down into the system. I want to eliminate the spring mechanism altogether. Would make the system a heckuva lot easier to deal with.

Marurun, mine works that way.
With a refurbished pin connector or new pin connector, the connection is so good, you don't have to push them down. I can play my games in the up position which helps to keep my pins in my connector from being bent. What bends them is putting the game in, then pushing down. Having the game go in and come back out without going down helps preserve the pin connector.
