Speculating on soon to be rare/expensive Playstation 2 Games

Post by molotovwars »

Well, its about that time in the Playstation 2's life. The games are probably as cheap as they are going to get, especially with many people selling their games to upgrade to the PS3 or other new consoles. I've been buying a lot of games now on the cheap, none of which are probably going to be rare or valuable, but good games I missed out.

From reading the NES rare and valuable games article it seems the rarest of the NES games are the ones that were released late in the system's life. Its that time for Playstation 2. Some of the other games that are valuable on SNES are the ones from series, and most of the Final Fantasy games have gone down quite a bit in price for the PS2.

Anyways, I decided to start this thread to get people's ideas on which games they think are going to become hard to come across. Some people may buy in to try to make a profit, but mostly I'd rather just get the games now before I have to pay twice as much if not more.

The big game that comes to mind is Marvel vs. Capcom 2, easily sells for $80 to $100. I imagine its rare because the game has a big following, but I don't really know any others that are selling high yet. Drop your ideas, I'd be glad to hear them.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence Limited Edition

I just can't believe how pricey that became when it was announce that the limited edition was a one time print. I am so glad I got mind when it first came out.

I looked at some of the prices on Shin Megami Tensei, and like you said all of the games in the series seem to be fetching a high price. I don't know anything about this series, I am looking at some of the stuff on wikipedia, but how many different games are there in the series for Playstation 2 and are other games in the series on other systems also fetching such high prices.

It seems so many of the rare PSX and SNES games are RPGs, looking at Shin Megami Tensei, I wonder if it will follow a similar trend for PS2. Either way I'll guess I'll have to try these games out via d/l because I've probably already missed my chance at buying them.

Also wow at MGS Subsistence LE - now thats a real LE, not like some of the stuff being put out now.

I don't think Devil May Cry will be that valuable. It definitely isn't rare, it's a massively selling game. Although, even though it isn't rare, it could get pricey. Like FFVII for example. There are millions of copies, but with the resurgence of the FVII mythos, prices have skyrocketed. I picked up a shrinkwrapped copy for 20 bucks at circuit city a few years ago, and now opened copies go for 100 bucks sometimes. I wish I wouldn't have opened that one. . . .

If you want to get in on the SMT action, why not start with persona 3:FES which is coming out in April for a lowly price of 29.99. One of the best and most playable game of the series. After that, you can start with Nocturne, a very good game with an awesome story, but be warned that it is hard as hell, which might be a turn off for many.

Makai Kingdom is already fetching a pretty high price, nearly $50. Of course, I fully expect the rarer RPGs to be some of the most sought after games, just like the last two generations. Also, I'd say quirky stuff like Rez will probably become a bit pricey. And all three Fatal Frame games are pretty expensive right now...I bet they'll stay that way. Which reminds me, I need to pick up 2 and 3...

Most of the Atlus titles have a nice value because they are only made in limited runs, with special packaging and what not. That's who put out the Shin Megami Tensei series. Persona 3 is already pricey. You could buy it in stores for 49 but it was going on ebay for 70-80 at the same time. Growlanser Generations deluxe pack, Ar Tonelico, the Artelier Iris series, and a coiuple of their other titles still go close to what they cost new. Rez is another nice title i think will still be collectible even though its on X-Box live. There are some other titles like Marvel vs. Capcom which just because of the demand it's soo expensive. Which is so wierd becasue is was released on 3 different sytems. It will be interesting to see what games jump up in price after a few years.[/i]

It's a shame they reprinted Ico and Shadow Of Collosus. The original ico in cardboard box with art cards was worth nearly £80 at one point. Then the reprint came and drove the price down :(.

They may go back up in price though for the limited editions. Well I hope they do because I have both and they're both in mint condition. They're locked away in a firesafe box in my house so that they don't get damaged. I've never played em. Just hope it's worth it.
