I can see where you're coming from honestly, but do you really think these guys aren't complete jackasses and in the right? Just curious.

Comparing this attack and the Sony one, using Niode's break-in examples, is like comparing somebody crawling through your window, using your bathroom, and then leaving, and somebody ransacking your house then trying to burn it down. If they were going for a full attack like they did with Sony, they would have downed it too most likely.

The correct analogy for what happened to Sony wouldn't be "someone left the door to their car open and it got stolen" it would be more like "someone had their car locked up tight but the locks happened to suck so it was rather easy to break into and steal."

And either way a crime was still committed and whether or not you have any sympathy for the victim is irrelevant. The people who did it should go to jail and its depressing that the law has not made that happen yet.

From being on this website a few months i see about a 50/50 ratio of those who condone this type of bullshit and those who don't. For every one like niode who falt sony for everything and incorrectly place no blame on the douchebag hackers, their are people like me who realize yeah sony was lacking in their security but by no means does that warrant hacking into their system to disrupt it for those of us who play by the rules.

Bottom line is these pricks are on some epic nerd quest to right a social injustice (in their minds) that the vast majority of people do not percieve or agree with. YES, many people on here HATE sony with every fiber of their existance, that muc is obvious. What can not wrap my brain around is how many of those haters support this type of activity.

Hackers are douchebags, plain and simple. Use that "constructive energy" for something good for once and MAYBE I will lighten my view on them. But we all know neither of those are going to happen. So my opinon on asshole hackers stands

Hackers steal personal info, but it's not their fault? I guess they just can't HELP stealing info, it's like an addiction or something? Come on.

Of course poor security is to blame, but to say the hackers deserve NO blame whatsoever is absurd. I'm not defending sony here, I'm defending those who's info was stolen. They didn't do SHIT to 'deserve' that.

I'd like to see you give up everything in your life that has been made better and/or more secure because of hackers.

(Like messageboards, for example.)
Please enlighten me as to what a hacker has done to improve my life, be speciific. I'm not being an ass, i'm curious what exactly you mean?

For example, when the VA (veterans association) was hacked a few yers back and I got a letter that my personal information was compromised, how did that help me?

When my PSN credit card was possibly stolen, how did that help me?

Again, i'm not fanning the flames or being sarcastic, I'm being serious, how does a hacker help me?

Hackers aren't all malicious, simple as that. In fact, I would say that a majority aren't.

There's basically white-hats and black-hats. White hats are the ones building the security systems to try and keep black hats from getting to your info, so yes, I'd say you benefit plenty.

There's a lot more to it than that, because it's not just security-related, but yeah. Maybe someone else will explain better, but you wouldn't have computers as powerful as they are today without them.

Have to disagree with you on this one. The people who build the security systems that are in place to protect those of us who use them are often called "IT specialists" or computer programers if you prefer. These are well educated and insightful people who make an honest living providing a service to others, in this case: protection. "Hackers", on the other hand, are perpetrating an illegal action at the expense, not benefit, of others. Their actions do nothing to further anything but their own agenda and ideals. Their motives are their own and their victims are EVERYONE else who is affected by what they do. Just like you cant scream "FIRE" in a movie theater, hackers are not protected by the ideal of free speech. What they engage in is not a protest, it's an attack. I'm not trying to be condescending in any way whatsoever, I'm just getting really tired of people comparing this criminal element to anything productive.

A lot of hackers break into sites, databases, etc and don't do any harm at all, information was exposed to them, but nothing comes from it, they don't use the information, they just show that they can get to it.

The company that was attacked then get exposed for having weak defenses on sensitive information and are forced to update and upgrade there security.

To me that is there actions doing something positive, the fault is with Sony, there network should never have been able to be breached.

Again, I have to disagree with your principle here. I simply cannot fathom any situation where attacking something illegally can be done with the cause of protecting that same thing. If I am shopping in WalMart and I notice that there is no security camera with a visual on the game case, your logic says I should open the case and rearrange everything with the intent of "proving" how vulnerable WalMart has left themselves. Why not instead simply inform a staff member of the noticed breach? The point I'm trying to make is this; Just because you see a weakness, doesn't mean you should exploit it. And that's why I refuse to believe these hackers have anything but malicious intent in their actions. If they were truly simply trying to prove Sony's vulnerability, there are other, LEGAL, ways of voicing this concern. These people were not trying to help anyone but themselves. Granted, Sony's apparent lack of effective security and their seemingly poor response to the crisis are bad marks against them to be sure. But to try and downplay the ILLEGAL and malicious nature of what these hackers did by pointing out the silver lining is not only wrong, but its a pretty tired argument that's been tried too many times already.
