Freezes, glitches, and save files lost... NERD RAGE!

Post by jfe2 »

I've been playing Final Fantasy on the Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls collection for the GBA for the past week or so. Today I picked it up and played through the ice dungeon, and then finally earned my badass airship. I paused the game for a second to check my equipment, and was met with a frozen screen... :x

I mistakenly forgot to save at all during the hour plus that I played this afternoon. My nerd rage will prevent me from playing for the rest of the day, but I'm sure I'll pick it up tomorrow to give it another go. When I was younger, this is the type of thing that would have made me never want to play the game again.

For example, I used to rent Final Fantasy VI from the video store all the time when I was a kid. I played through to almost the end and the game lost my save out of nowhere. Made me never want to touch the game again... I had put in HOURS of my life, and the thought of doing it again just to see the end of the game was too much for me.

Anyone else have moments like these? Have you matured as you've gotten older, or do you still banish the game to your backloggery when you lose a save or encounter a glitch?

It depends on the game. If i'm really into it, i'll keep playing. But as I get older, have less free time and more things to play - I tend to put things back on the shelf if I lose a lot of progress.

While replaying Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus a few weeks ago, it froze on me. My last save point was about an hours worth of puzzles back... I don't think I've played it since.

Didn't bother me that much. I've beaten it a lot.

I bought Soul Caliber III at a gamestop once on a whim because I hadn't played it in a long time. I took it home and loved it until the day my save file became corrupted and deleted all my hard work (innumerable unlockable content in that game).

That's fine, though, I thought. I'll just unlock it again. And then the file corrupted again...and a third time. Now I don't even touch that game anymore because I know it's an exercise in futility.

Generally, if it's a really difficult game, and I lose an hour or more's progress, I won't touch the game again for at least 2 years. I can't stand that sort of thing.

Often I'm about the same. I just hate losing progress.

Theres a glitch in Secret of Evermore (SNES) that prevented me from reaching the last level. It's been well over a decade since so the details are hazy, but I remember calling Nintendo's official game help line, and after explaining it in detail being told I was screwed.

If I lose over 2 hours of progress in an RPG then it's generally a game breaker for me. It's not even that I rage over it, I just usually don't feel like re-doing over 2 hours worth of stuff, and then I end up never bothering to play the game again.

I lost about 2 hours of FF7 once and since then I always have 2-3 save files when I play RPGs, especially Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Those games freeze all the time.

Yeah I got stuck in the bed frame in my house in Fallout 3 and was in danger of losing a ton of progress if I couldn't find my way out. The auto save system screwed me when I killed my character while trying to grenade my way out, and saved over the file I was using. I literally spent a half hour mini-nuking/grenading my way out, but I eventually did it.

Had a similar thing happen in Mass Effect. Can't remember where, but I got stuck in a step or something and lost a few hours. I've since learned to use multiple save files as well!
