snes 2/snes jr/snes mini/snes redesign/sns-101
Re: snes 2/snes jr/snes mini/snes redesign/sns-101
Assuming it's a legit SNES Jr, just Retr0Bright it. I have not tried the process yet, but I am thinking of trying it on my white Saturn. It's not even that yellowed, at all, but it's definitely not quite the original light grey shade. Perhaps I will try just the controller first as my white Saturn is very important to me.
Re: snes 2/snes jr/snes mini/snes redesign/sns-101
Meh, I mostly bought it for it's insides. I can swap it out into my other SNES mini which has a mint shell (but isn't working). I now have 4 SNES, 3 of which need some work to one degree or another. We'll see what happens.
Re: snes 2/snes jr/snes mini/snes redesign/sns-101
hahah glad that worked out
wasn't really what i was intending for though. do you guys have any thoughts on owning this from a collector's perspective? it seems to me that it would be more reliable & just as easy to mod in a smaller/sleeker package, but it doesn't seem to have as much substance to it. retro games these days are so easy to download and play that owning a retro system to me has become more of a luxury hobby than an outlet to solely enjoy the games themselves. i didn't wanna pick up one of these and get that "it's not the same" feeling

Re: snes 2/snes jr/snes mini/snes redesign/sns-101
I wouldn't say it's any more or less reliable than the original SNES model. As far as "just as easy to mod" goes, depends what mod we're talking about. Cutting the tabs out to play SFC carts, yeah, it's just as easy. If not easier. Modding for 50/60Hz, I'm not too sure about. I know the SNES mini combined some chips into one, so traditional 50/60Hz mods (using switches) is not possible. Though there's a new "switchless" mod out there for the SNES. It's basically a mod chip that defeats the region lock and auto switches for 50/60Hz, not sure if it works for mini though. I would assume it was designed for the original SNES, though it might be able to be adapted for the mini. Any mods for the CIC are gonna be the same on either model though.
But we already mentioned all the differences between the two models in this thread. One reason to stay away from the mini is because you have to mod it to get S-Video. But if that doesn't bother you, and you don't plan on modding, then it's just a matter of aesthetic preference. And I see what you're saying there, with the "it's not the same" feeling. Personally, as far as aesthetics go, I think I'd take the original model over the mini.
PS: These wireless controllers won't work on the mini due to the controller ports having different spacing than the original model.

Re: snes 2/snes jr/snes mini/snes redesign/sns-101
The SNES mini is easier to mod for Japanese games if you want to take that whole piece out to cut the tabs. The mechanism is simpler.
The SNES jrs are susceptible to yellowing. Not as bad though.
Fakes are out there. The best way is to look at the repair sticker on the back. It won't look right if its a fake. The gamebit screws are a good call to, however; I worked on one, lost the gamebit screws, and used regular phillips, then I sold it on eBay. So you know some jerk like me might do that. The only 100% way to tell is to the look at the board. A real SNES will have few chips, and fake will have many chips.

Does anyone have a link they'd recommend for modding instructions for s-video output? (i.e. one you followed and had success with) I got a mini in box (great shape) but i'd love to use my nintendo s-video cords I got from the racketboy shop.

Here's the procedure I used: http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=126959
You can just use the 75 ohm resistors and it'll work fine, the caps aren't necessary.

^ I have been wanting to ask some one that has actually done that mod. Perfect!
Have you ever used S-Video on a model 1 SNES though? I would like to get a comparison to that. I'll most likely be using the method linked above to mod my SNES minis in the near future, so I'll compare it then. It's just that there's so many almost conflicting methods out there right now.
Have you tried it with and without the caps? Or just without?

Ziggy thats the site that I used to do my mod. He has a link to a spanish version of the instructions that are much more detailed. I did use the caps. I haven't tried without the caps.
The mini does look noticeably better than its brother, only because the red line problem is not as bad. Any other benefit is slight, and there are other methods that will improve the picture more, such as properly calibrated the brightness, color, contrast, etc.
