I'd rather do console RPGs personally. At least I can emulate those on a portable....sirkit wrote:I would definitely be interested in either Chrono Trigger or Earthbound... never really played either.
Apparently a real hidden gem for the PC is the 1999 Planescape: Torment developed by Black Isle Studios. Just check out some of the reviews: http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B0 ... ewpoints=1 and http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/planesca ... index.html . The only problem is that it might be difficult to find a physical copy of the game. However, I've heard that you can purchase a digital copy from GameTap.

I've played it (never finished it, though) and indeed that game is pure gold.sirkit wrote:Apparently a real hidden gem for the PC is the 1999 Planescape: Torment developed by Black Isle Studios. BTW, this reminded me of something I wanted to ask. Racketboy, I know that this is mainly a console site, but will we also play pc games in the club? Because there are a lot of great games that were never ported to a console.
yeah, I'm not ruling out PC games, but they will probably only be peppered in here or there.NebachadnezzaR wrote:I've played it (never finished it, though) and indeed that game is pure gold.sirkit wrote:Apparently a real hidden gem for the PC is the 1999 Planescape: Torment developed by Black Isle Studios. The more accessible the games are (emulation -- especially on portables) the better in my book.

My 2cents....
If we do a chrono trigger type game, lets keep it original or emu on the SNES, not the remake...
It seems better if it is a retro club to keep it semi retro.
But, I would like to continue with the old arcade games with no endings just high scores for a while... its nice to pick them up for a minute or two and move on with life... plus that way we can change up games every couple weeks or on a monthly basis. I know if we played a rpg I would not complete a 40 to 80 hour game in a month at this stage in my life.
Oh, and a suggestion for a RPG - LUNAR: The Silver Star Story (my favorite all time rpg - and the first one I ever beat) or Shining Force.

Gee, I was kinda thinking a good first RPG would be Phantasy Star IV on the Genesis. I don't think we'll see any RPGs for a few more games, though, and they'll likely be a little more spaced out in the distribution. From the look of the posts and people's opinions no matter what we choose some will be excited and some disappointed.
And SpaceBooger, if we're rotating eras or game types relatively frequently it won't be long before another good arcade or puzzle-style game comes up again. And with a lot of games that do have endings you can still do score challenges. Shooters are ripe for it.
As for which version of a game we do, I agree that we should try to keep it retro, but where remakes are close to the original and easier for some people to get I personally have no objection. If we do any of the earlier Square games and people want to play the PSX remake, as long as it's somewhat faithful (the remakes of FF1 are awfully pansy next to the original), I think the goal should be to allow as many people as possible to enjoy the experience.
That's why we're perfectly happy with emulation. Some games we might pick could be impossible to get access to or acquire without emulation, and it's important to make sure as many people as possible can participate.

I view that the minimum a game should be chosen is two weeks (maybe one week if it is something like Pong). Not only does this give everyone a chance to play the games atleast once (shorter games a few times), it gives those making the articles enough time to you know go to work, write the next article, play the choices, and attempt to have a normal social life.
