Are American games ever popular in Japan?

Post by BoringSupreez »

As everyone knows, Japanese videogames are, and have been since the 80's, very popular in the US. But I was wondering, does it ever work the other way? Are there any American game series that are big in Japan?

Japan LOVED Ultima. Dragon Quest was pretty much completely inspired by it for example.

I'm not too sure otherwise. I know japan goes nuts for a lot of american things, but I can't think of anything game-wise.

Like what, besides McDonalds, Coke and Spongebob? As far as I can tell, they just don't seem to like our stuff as much as we like theirs.

Star Wars (just look at pretty much every Final Fantasy game), countless american musicians, superheroes (I've seen Superman referenced tons, and there's been a lot of Marvel-related anime coming out recently, not to mention the Marvel vs Capcom games), all kinds of cartoons (hell they made their own Powerpuff Girls anime), The Matrix and Alien franchises, I could go on I'm sure. Japan likes a TON of stuff from here, you hear about random american things with inexplicable popularity in Japan all the time.

Apparently Japan really loves Grand Theft Auto too.

I've heard they like all those american crime shows like CSI and Law & Order a bunch as well.

They also really got into Wizardry, to the point that they took over the series entirely after SirTech disbanded.
