I was just as amazed as I imagine you are. Capcom may not be infallible but they do seem to listen to their customers more closely than most companies these days. I wish other big developers would follow suit - Draconian DRM is a knee jerk reaction that doesn't solve the problem at all.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

While it's still a shame that they are using GFW, I'm sure I'll get this anyway now that they've actually loosened the DRM a great deal.

I mean, if for no other reason, I gotta get it for the mods.

Good on them for removing bullshit DRM, since it only harms the legit customer. If I was interested in this game, I would be more likely to buy it thanks to this. Good work, Capcom.

Shortly after launch (it might even be at launch, but we’ll see how submission timing and approval goes) we will roll out a small title update that will completely remove the character limitations for offline mode. That is to say, once you’ve updated, you will be able to use all 39 characters when not connected to the Internet to practice your combo timings, have some fun with a friend on a laptop, or whatever while offline.
Why not remove it before releasing the game! Probably the plan all along.

Bah! This is just like what Valve did with Half Life 2. Online "One Time Install" authentication to unlock all the features or to even play a game! So what happens a few years from now when support goes away? No don't tell me it will get cracked or the company will graciously free it of DRM later. A sign of the times, are there any new games for consoles that are not DRMed one way or another?

Or maybe it's something as simple as the game already went gold, so removing it isn't really feasible in a timely fashion.

No. Deal with it.

That's a pretty crappy way to treat someone with a legitimate concern.

He preemptively rejected the solution. Not much I can do about that. I'm just a little tired of seeing people complain that DRM exists. Getting up in arms about SF4 not letting you use half the cast offline? Sure, that's something to get pissed about, since that's pretty shitty. But the existance of any kind of DRM? That's just not going away from big budget releases. Might as well complain that cars run on gas.

Why not complain* about cars running on gas? I don't think it's the best idea to say, "Well, there's the big dildo, we might as well just bend over." With that attitude, restrictive DRM will continue to exist, rendering games played after support unplayable. And oil companies will continue to rake in billions in pure revenue, enriching their CEOs, while raping the consumer at the pump and blocking with bribes any attempt to reintroduce the electric car back onto the scene.

*By complain, I do mean more than just whine about it on forums. Action is always better, and mere complaining does nothing.

DRM for a game prior to release isn't unheard of. The Witcher 2 had it, and it was again removed with a patch after release as part of the overall plan. It's there to prevent massive piracy before the game is available at retail. Hard to make the argument that it'd hurt legitimate consumers if it's not actually available to them.
