Yep, that's the middle button.

Since we're on the topic, is there a way to replicate middle button paste in Windows? In X, middle click pastes whatever is in the primary selection. If you have an URL selected, middle clicking on Firefox opens the selected URL.

In order to do the same on Windows, I have to select, ctrl-C, switch to firefox, focus on the URL bar, and ctrl-V. This isn't as convenient as "select, switch, middle click, done".
In fact, when you middle click on Firefox in windows you get into this really strange scroll mode. This is useless since your finger is on the scroll wheel anyway, and even if you don't have one, the scroll bar is easier to control. Does anyone ever use that?

I may just look up how to bind ctrl-v to middle click in windows. That would be close enough, even if I have to manually copy selections.

Ctrl+Click is another option. Personally I can't stand it when links automatically open in a new tab/window (with certain exceptions, like popups for instructions on a page). I want to be able to decide "Ok, these links I want in a new tab, these ones I want to just update the window". The other thing is when you click a link that opens a new tab it steals focus. Many times I don't want to look at that link right away; I want to take a look after I finish reading something on this page.

When you Ctrl+Click it 'steals focus' as you say, Ctrl+Shift+Click does not 'steal focus.'

I always just right click - new tab.

In fact, it drives me nuts when I go to a page that opens a tab by default, heh.

8 at work, don't remember if I'm on 9 at home or not. There is that checkbox in Internet Options->Tabs "Always switch to new tab when created" that I have unchecked. I'm guessing shift overrides that behavior. Is yours checked?
