Viewtiful Joe 1 or 2?

I am trying to play this game,
but due to the increasing number of good games I am trying to
cutting it short, and not play more than 1 game of a franchise

which should I get?
is the sequel just more of the same thing
or is it
exactly like the first, but everything improved?

and btw, how does it compare to alien hominid?

They're nothing alike whatsoever.

It's the first one (you're right about PS2-only though). You can use him in Red Hot Rumble too.

It's not that there's anything wrong with it, but the first one is the strongest entry in the series and there's no reason to skip it. If you're enjoying the first one then I'd definitely suggest playing 2 and Red Hot Rumble some time.

If you're going to make a point to only play one of the games in the franchise though, I'd say you gotta go with the first one. It's just the coolest one.

The first Viewtiful Joe is one of my favorite games on the PS2, hands down. While I was excited for the sequel, part 2 just didn't compare. I couldn't really put my finger on it, but I consider the first Viewtiful Joe one of the finest 2D beat-em-ups ever made.

The second is just a rehash from what I've heard. Might as well play the classic original, it's a more significant game

The second one was just kind of uninspired. They added the ability to play as Joe's girlfriend but it felt tacked on and redundant. There's nothing necessarily wrong with it, but I felt that it was just less memorable then the first one.

Does Viewtiful Joe 2 run "cleaner" on the Gamecube or PS2 and is it noticeable? I read mixed reviews on maybe better frames per minute second on the Gamecube version, notably Alien Hominid, Beyond Good Evil and the Viewtiful Joe series.
