DDR2 800 RAM is expensive, anyone want to part with some...

Post by Lodestar »

...older hardware that simply isn't feasible to buy new anymore?

I'm looking to buy 2x2 GB or 2x4 GB sticks for a reasonable price, I don't want to upgrade my motherboard to use DDR3 - even though it's much cheaper nowadays. The price gouging is ridiculous, for 80 bucks you can get 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, but 65 will only get you 4 GB of DDR2.

Cheers.

EDIT: Can a mod move this to buy/sell/trade?

It's not necessarily price gouging. As time goes on, newer technology provides more bang for the buck. So $65 for 4GB of DDR2 RAM does not seem unreasonable to me.

Keep in mind that it wasn't that long ago when I had to pay (actually my company) $500 for 512MB of RAMBUS ram.

Well, the way I see it, the newer RAM is cheaper as an incentive to buy it - but if doing so requires people to buy new motherboards, then that's even better for business. Other hardware tends to depreciate in value over the years, but the price of DDR2 RAM has actually gone up, much like it's predecessor. The reason is supposedly manufacturing costs, since DDR2 RAM has dropped in demand.

If you look at this chart:

http://bensbargains.net/history/19391

2GB of DDR2 was $185 on Feb 2007. A year later, it went down to $35. Probably due to higher production runs/yields and lower costs.

So $65 for 4GB of higher speed ram doesn't seem to bad to me.

It's more or less the same now for 2x1 GB, usually the 40-50 range. When you go higher, that's when the pricing becomes increasingly more disproportionate with current DDR3 RAM.

For example, 2x4 GB sticks of DDR2 800 = 160 USD. For DDR3 you can get the same thing for about 75 USD.

I have 8GB because I was able to get a good price. Although not as intensive as CAD, having several Adobe apps open at the same time can consume quite a bit of RAM. But in all seriousness if you're not doing any sort of design/development, 4GB should do for pretty much anything.
