There's a shitload of Gundam 2d fighters, I know at least one of them was popular with fans and I think it was Gundam Battle Assault 2. I think I saw people playing it in a gaming room at an anime convention

Haha, I just played through it two nights ago! I wouldn't say it's a great game, just good. It's pretty much a meat and potatoes shooter, but being a Macross game makes it awesome. There are a lot of great anime cut scenes, which, if I remember correctly, are made just for this game. I remember getting this for my Saturn back in 2000. A few years late, but also looong ago. :) Best part about it? It can be had for cheap! It's easily one of the cheapest and most common shooters on the Saturn. I'm not sure if it ever came out on the PS1 or not.

Overall, I think I prefer SNES Macross as a shooter (errr... shooting game). Macross 2036 on the PC Engine is also pretty decent. The arcade ones were also fun.

I just tried Gargoyles on the Genesis for the first time yesterday. It's remarkably good!

I LOVE this game. It's gets hard as hell near the end though. I've only beaten it a few times. I tried to like the anime and the manga, but didn't care for either really. It is one of my all-time favorite shmups though. It's great fun on my Capcom arcade stick for the SNES.

I also think that Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex for the PS2 is a good anime game. It has tons of style, the controls give you a feeling of agility and strength, and it's a nice continuation of the GITS world. The movie version of Ghost in the Shell is probably my favorite anime, so this game had high expectations to live up to.

I think it's more of a nostalgia thing for me since I grew up on Macross and Gundam. The cutscenes just gave me flashbacks of my childhood.

It was a comic long before it was an anime, so I don't know if that counts. My understanding of the title was which games are based soley off of anime. I am just thinking too much!

I can agree, at least from the Macross front. I used to watch Robotech every Saturday morning, rent Robotech VHS tapes whenever I could, and buy Robotech toys when I had the chance. I feel like a kid when I play that game!

I can't say the same for Gundam, though.
