So a silly side question, what are some of yalls favorite games based off of animes?
A couple of my favorites:
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon - Arcade and 16 bits - A fun beatemup
Video is from the prettier arcade version
Area 88/UN Squadron - Arcade and NES - a great horizontal shooter
Angelic Layer - GBA - Its like Megaman Battle Network meets a skill stop or DDR

I figured MKR on the Sat and Yuyu Hakuso on the Gen/MD will be real quick to be posted. Odds are Macross Do You Remember Love on the Sat/PSX will be on the first page aswell.

Super Robot Taisen series (crossover mecha anime games)
Yu Yu Hakusho Final (SFC)
Yu Yu Hakusho Tokubetsuhen (SFC)
Hokuto Musou (PS3, based on Fist of the North Star)
Berserk (PS2)
Those would be my tops.

Re: Favorite games based off of anime?
That reminds me, I would say Sword of the Berserk(Dreamcast) if it weren't all: 5 minutes of gameplay, 45 minutes of story, 5 minutes of gameplay, an hour of story, repeat.
I remember having liked this before there was a ...less sloppy patch(that I'm linking to) in my RPG playing days:
http://www.romhacking.net/trans/1379/
As a SRPG it sees you leveling up by scoring the number of kills needed, rather than exp. Also gives stage choices.
This isn't half bad either, usual NES difficulty though, but it give you the chance to rescue defeated characters: http://www.romhacking.net/trans/773/ There's a PS2 game based on the license, that doesn't seem so bad, but I personally don't have any experience with it. Also a cool 1980 arcade game(with the kind of graphics you could expect for that year/the previous decade) that sees you trying to avoid a guard and steal the money bags at the top of the screen. Almost a reverse Frogger kind of scenario.
I actually liked Keith Courage in the Alpha Zones, whose Japanese counterpart was based on a childs anime. This was an action platformer for the PC Engine/Turbografx-16, for those not in the know.
I liked Dragon Power(NES) a lot, which, little known at the time, was a Dragon Ball game totally neutered for the American audience. It was basically a top down beat em up, that turned into something of a fighter for boss battles.
I think this was an anime, it's basically more of a Symphony of the Night prototype than Castlevania 2 was: http://www.romhacking.net/trans/109/ A little more linear as it actually has stages though.

Aladdin on the Genesis/MD is pretty sweet, if Disney Anime counts. Heck, all the Mickey Mouse games on the Genny are great!
SFC Macross is actually a really good shoot 'em up. The PS2/PS3 DBZ fighting games are fun, as are the PS3 Naruto fighting games (I assume they are on the 360 as well).
Ummm.... haha, Keith Courage?
But, the absolute BEST game based off an anime? Astro Boy: Omega Factor. Thank you Treasure!

Inuyasha for the Playstation. Keep in mind it was a budget title, and as such was a decent 2d fighter
Dragonball Z Budokai and Budokai 2 were excellent. Total fan service and decent gameplay. DBZ probably has the largest number of pure shit as well as pretty excellent games of any anime series
And yeah, if we made a topic on Disney games or cartoon games in general from the 16-bit era there was a TON of good stuff. The Adventures of Batman and Robin on the Super Nintendo was incredibly good

Dragon Ball Z Super Butouden Series (SFC)
Dragon Ball Z Hyper Dimension (SFC)
if Disney Anime does count, then Darking Duck for NES. it has mega man gameplay into it.
...and if other Anime counts: Biker Mice from Mars (SNES) and TMNT (SNES/Genesis)

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Such an amazing game, it should take priority over even 3rd Strike for a re-release. Sadly, won't happen due to licensing bullshit.
The Afro Samurai game is quite solid as well.

One I really like is SDF Macross: Do You Remember Love? on the Saturn. A great two-disc epic shmup that is often overlooked.
