Linux 3.0 Released

Post by lisalover1 »

Version 3.0.00 of the Linux kernel was released last night, and boy, has it been a long time coming. The previous version released was 2.6.39, and version 2.0.00 launched a whopping 15 years ago! There wasn't anything groundbreaking or spectacular in the new kernel; only support for a bunch more video cards and integrated support for Kinect [wow, Linux got official computer support for a Microsoft product before Microsoft did! ] as well as some code optimizations for certain processors. This release is more so meant to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Linux's release than anything. I can't wait to see where Linux goes from here. I have been an Ubuntu user since 2007, and I do not intend to quit anytime soon.

Hopefully the folks in charge of arch linux add it soon. I haven't updated in about a week. Hurrah!

I'm sure Ubuntu will incorporate it in due time; it is a landmark release, even if just in name.

6 months from now they will. Ubuntu releases a new version every 6 months. Unofficial builds will have it very soon though. But theres nothing stopping you from doing it yourself either though.

Not much of a reason to install a new kernel unless you specifically need one of the new features. I don't even know what kernel version I'm running now. Hard to get excited about new kernel releases these days, they've been feature complete for a desktop user for a long time.

Personally, I would have dropped the 2.6 and just called it Linux 40. Big numbers are cool.
