Yes we did. Perhaps it's a bit harsh. The handheld titles are still good as far as I know. The console games, on the other hand, have been on a rather sharp decline after Sonic Heroes came out, which I enjoyed. After that it's been games like Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog '06 and so on that I mostly haven't bothered to buy. Maybe Sonic Colors is a comeback. The last new Sonic game I played was Sonic and the Secret Rings which I haven't even made myself finish because I dislike it so much.
I didn't even like Sonic Adventure. Just the 2D games for me, which have always been great: Genesis, GBA, or XBLA.

As far as I'm concerned, Sonic died after one final gasp of quality in 2001. He's 10 in my book.

Then again, there was never a lack of sonic on Mega Drive or Game Gear either, so maybe i'm just tired of the series in general.
That's pretty much what I was thinking, it might have just caught up to them.

Looking at the Mario and Sonic series:

NES:
SMB,2/2J,3
SNES:
SMW

Genesis:
Sonic,2,3, & Knuckles, 3D Blast

Already 5 titles on the first machine Sonic appeared on vs. 3 or 4(counting both versions of 2) titles across 2 generations for Mario. Then they went back to the Master System and made another game, so 6 console games for Sonic in roughly 1 generation vs. 4 for Mario in 2. This isn't even counting hand helds or spinoffs(or remakes).

Game Boy:
Super Mario Land, 2

Game Gear:
Sonic(though to be fair this is the same as the Master System game), 2, Blast, Chaos, Triple Trouble, Labyrinth

so 2 more Mario(6) games and 5(not counting 1 version of the master system/game gear game) more Sonic games(11)

N64:
Super Mario 64

Dreamcast;
Sonic Adventure, 2

I don't even know how to keep up from there, but that's 7 Mario games across 4 machines, and 13 Sonic games across just as many. This is before they dropped out of the console market and could put him on any other console.

I think you're missing a bunch of games here, including SMW2: Yoshi's Island, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, Virtual Boy Wario Land (VB), Wario Land II (GBC), Wario Land 3 (GBC), and those are just the platformers. If we include non-platforming Mario games, like puzzle games or the one RPG they came out, Mario titles and their spinoffs easily outnumber Sonic titles. Just take a look at the Wikipedia list:

seems like he's not including mario games that don't actually feature mario as the main character

since he's not including games like knuckles chaotix in his sonic list, that sounds fair to me

This. When I said it annoyed me how many there have been, I specifically meant main series games. At least the spin offs offer a different experience gameplay wise - not as similar as 10 of the same genre games in 5 years.

Also, not counting different genre spin off like mario kart, sports, etc. Its not the character I'm fed up with, its the games. Fact remains that whilst this generation brought us Mario 64 DS, New Super Mario Bros, NSMB Wii, Galaxy, Galaxy and Galaxy 2 (and i'll be honest, I wouldnt mind a break from Mario for a year or two). Oh, and All -Stars as well if you want to count that. In the same time frame, just for Nintendo systems we've got:

Sonic Rush
Sonic Rush Adventure
Sonic Colors (DS)
Sonic and the Secret Rings
Sonic and the Black Knight
Sonic Colors (Wii)
Sonic Unleashed
Sonic Collection (DS collection - if we're comparing against all stars)
Sonic 4 Episode 1

add in the HD consoles Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic Generations etc - thats an awful lot of sonic platformers in about 5 years. Like 2 a year. Not counting the PSP games because I THINK they're spin offs, and not counting different versions of games like Sonic Unleashed, which are too similar to seperate really.

I don't mind sequels in a series, but it irks me when they pump them out really fast. It's crazy to me that some franchises have far more games (not including spin offs) than the amount of years they've been in existence. I absolutely love Zelda, but if they releases 8 new zelda games in 5 years, I'd frankly be a bit sick of them. And I'd WANT to buy them, but at the same time, they'd be stopping me buying more obscure games that I like to pick up now and then.
