To me, FFXII is the worst in the series... Excluding the online games that should not be called FFXI and FFXIV...
It would make sense for people that started playing FF on PS2 to like the PS2 games and probably even XIII.

irixith is talking about the people that started playing them on SNES, I would assume. Finding people that started playing them on SNES and actually like Square Enix is a difficult task (although I know there are some).

They don't have any need for quality or innovation, they will always sell, even if the games are mediocre. Why bother then?

Of course this means that when they realize that the crash is inevitable they will not be able to stop.

And yes, the story is pretty one-sided tough the FFXII art anecdote doesn't look very farfetched to me.

Granted, I only bought it a few weeks ago, but I'm a good 12 or so hours in so far and I'm really enjoying it. I haven't been this hooked by a FF game in a long time.
12 frustrates me because I WANT to like it, but it goes out of its way to spite me. The combat system actively wrests control of your party away from you, the license board system is stupid, and I'd take a party consisting of only Squall, Tidus, and Advent Children Cloud over Vaan*. I don't think I've ever seen a character so absolutely irrelevant to the plot. From after the "I'M CAPTAIN BASCH!" minigame to the Demon Wall, where I called it a day, the game basically became "Stare at Fran's ass while my party does shit for me since I can't control them".

*disclaimer- I actually like Squall and Tidus. However, the fan stereotype of their annoying-ness is how I feel about Vaan.

Yup. Those of us that grew up with both Square and Enix before they ever thought of merging together are most likely to be the ones griping about the leather and zippers and hairstyles and "is he male or female I DON'T KNOW".

And people like my younger brother, who grew up playing PS2 and Wii, actually somehow LIKE the art style of the modern FF games. I can't stand it, I just hate the whole girly-boy look. Why do the Japanese like effeminate males so much anyway?

I was so looking forward to 12. It looked to be such a wonderful departure from what we'd seen in VII, X, X-2, Kingdom Hearts, etc. Then it actually came out and I actually played it, and I still feel really lukewarm about it. I want to love it, but there's just too many flaws to ignore.

I stand by the idea there's a pretty good game buried somewhere underneath the heaping pile of bullshit that takes up the majority of what actually came out. Vaan was literally added because Square thought the game wouldn't sell well enough without a prettyboy lead.

Also, I thought Nomura's style was pretty cool looking back in the psx days. Final Fantasy VIII and Parasite Eve had a pretty pleasing look to their designs. I think around FFX he went insane or something.

Don't even get me started on what they did to Cid in FFXIII.

"Bishonen" (pretty boy or whatever) is a raving trend though very apparent in most modern anime as well. Very rare to see shows with MEN in it thesedays.

Well, most of the only series with men and characters that aren't supposed to be beautiful boys are seinen series, which are aimed at adult males. Then again, for as much of that as there is, there is a lot more moe pandering seinen. I've got to admit that I enjoy both styles. :D
