Yesterday, I attended an anime convention and picked up Ranma 1/2: Chounai Gekitou Hen. It's a fighting game sure, but it seems pretty crappy.
I guess that's what I get for doing no research. Now that I do have it, I looked up other Ranma 1/2 games for the Super Famicom and there seems to be at least four others.
Which one(s) are the best and why? I suppose I'll try them out on my Super Powerpak before I buy, but I'd like to know what you guys think first.

I have read that the 3rd and final game (which is actually the one you played) is the best. It is said to have the most solid fighting engine.
Re: Ranma 1/2 Super Famicom games -which are the best?
This is like, my specialty and junk...
Anyway, you got your titles mixed up. Here's a rundown.
So, Chounai GekiTouhen (or Neighborhood Combat as its known) was the first of the SFC Ranma fighters, and it's actually the worst of the bunch. It has a lot of problems, as you've seen from playing it. This was butchered further and released in the states as a goofy ass game called Street Combat.
The second one, Bakuretsu Rantou-hen, is the only one released in the states unchanged, and they called it Hard Battle. Most people are familiar with this game in one way or another, even if they're not familiar with Ranma. It's still not the greatest, but its far improved over the last one.
The third fighter and by far the best one, and the one you're thinking of, is Chougi Ranbuhen (Super Battle). Its a great game, and surprisingly close to copying the Street Fighter 2 formula. The only problem is the slow pace. If this game had a turbo mode, it'd be fantastic.
As for the other two SFC Ranma games, neither of them are fighters.
Akaneko-dan Teki Hihou is a traditional turn based rpg. There's a fan translated ROM out there if you're ever interested in playing it.
Ougi Jaanken is a vs. puzzle game in the tetris falling block style. The pieces are based on rock paper scissors, and its actually quite fun to play.
If you do want to pick up another fighter to get the bad taste of Chounai GekiTouhen out of your mouth, Chougi Ranbuhen is the one you want.

Was the first ranma fighter the only one released in the US? or were any of these other ones brought over?CFFJR wrote:This is like, my specialty and junk...Anyway, you got your titles mixed up. Here's a rundown.

Only the second game was brought over, Bakuretsu Rantohen or Hard Battle. Its the only Ranma game that was released as a Ranma game outside Japan.Mechblue wrote:Was the first ranma fighter the only one released in the US? or were any of these other ones brought over?
Box art for the american and japanese versions (though this was also released in Europe):

They did technically release the first game, Chonai Gekitouhen, as well, but they changed all of the character designs to generic nonsense. Its impossible to identify it as a Ranma game if you don't already know that it is.
Screenshot and boxart comparison of the two versions.
Ranma Neighborhood Combat (this is the game SatoshiMatrix picked up):

Street Combat:

Those screenshots represent the same level and the same characters (Steven, the guy in blue armor, is Ranma. The other guy is Genma). Very different, though the gameplay still stinks, heh.
The third game, Chougi Ranbuhen (boxart below), was planned to be released in America, but it was canceled. According to Ranma 1/2 Perfect Edition, the company that intended to release it went out of business. Which is a damn shame, because its great.

Ok, I have hard battle. Wanted to make sure i didn't miss a Ranma game. I don't know that I'd get street combat, looks just awful. If they'd kept the Ranma characters I'd likely get it.

Yeah, don't bother. The game loses 90% of its value without the Ranma characters. Of course, it doesn't help that the filler characters in Street Combat look like they were scrapped together in about 30 seconds. Kodachi the Black Rose was turned into an effeminate clown (no I'm not joking, literally a clown) for god's sake.Mechblue wrote:Ok, I have hard battle. Wanted to make sure i didn't miss a Ranma game. If you want to play the game, you're better off just buying the original Japanese version. Maybe Satoshi will sell you his copy.
Do you have Chougi Ranbuhen? If you don't, you really should get it.

CFFJR, was it you that I made that Ranma repro for? The Red Cat Gang (if I remember correctly)?

Yeah, that was me.Ziggy587 wrote:CFFJR, was it you that I made that Ranma repro for? The Red Cat Gang (if I remember correctly)?
I'm actually in the middle of playing through it again, heh. In my list above I listed it as Akanekodan Tekihihou. Super simple as rpgs go, but I love it!
