Reasonable Price for Sega Nomad?

Post by Mechblue »

Just wondering what you guys would say a reasonable price for a sega nomad is? I've looked at completed listings on ebay but it seems kind of random pricing wise. See some go for a lot others around 30?

What would you say is reasonable for a working unit by its self? The store said they wanted $50 but I think thats far too expensive. Is $30 a lot closer?

Is the nomad worth the price?

Thanks.

If it comes with the ac adapter and a battery case, and works, then I'd say go for it. Personally, I like buying items in-store as its right there for you to test and inspect before buying. Or you could hit ebay and try to win an auction for $30-$40, but typically I've seen them jump to around $50 in the final moments. Plus, many of the lower priced Nomads are simply the handheld itself. No ac, no battery pack. And they usually have a fault.

Edit: rereading your post, you make it sound like its just the unit. If there is no battery pack, I'd forget it. What good is a Nomad without power? If there is a battery pack, I'd also push them to also include an ac adapter (they might have one in the back in a box of SEGA ac plugs).

I sold two of them last year, and they were JUST the Nomad no battery pack, AC etc. Both of them went for about $50. Seems to be the going price.

Keep in mind though that if you buy the unit alone for $50, you'll probably spend an additional $20+ on a battery pack. I prefer the AA battery pack, as you can use quality rechargeables.

It would probably be better to just buy a unit with the battery pack included.

Thanks for the tips. One thing I was curious about is if the Nomad can just use a standard genesis power brick for power? or does it require something special just for the Nomad?

With out the battery pack its pretty much a Game Gear that plays sega games (my game gear was always tethered to a wall for power  ).

So, maybe worth the $30 or so tag but I'm unsure if I'm going to nab it even if they agree to that price... :(

I appreciate the advice.

Keep in mind that 15 year old Nomad rechargeable packs will probably no longer hold a charge at this point as they were NiCD. Hailrazer made a thread with info on replacing the battery inside. He has some pictures and I added some from the battery I made with his guide too.

Thats a good point. I don't think i'd be carrying it around anyways to really put the battery to use. I was tethered to the wall with my Sega Game gear back in the day due to how obscenely fast the batteries dried up.

I'd much rather trade some of my stuff for a Nomad than spend more cash on something thats going to sit on my shelf.

Thanks for the info.

I've seen some people doing that with those old hand held systems. Actually makes these old things portable!
