Just got a PS3 slim, need info
Just got a PS3 slim thanks to Gamestop's $100 off coupon. I've never really been a Sony fan, and I have never owned a current gen Sony console, so I've not really get up with PS3 happenings. So basically I'm asking for someone to bring me totally up to speed on the major events having to do with PS3dom. I only own a Wii this generation. One thing I've found confusing is apparently there's different editions of the same game with different add ons, could somebody explain that. I want to get Resident Evil 5, whats the difference between the greatest hits and Gold editions?
Controller wise, I know there was sixaxis and now there's Dualshock 3. I know it charges using that USB cable. Will any USB cable of that type work? I'd like to purchase a longer cable from monoprice so I have more space with charging. Also does it charge the controller when its off?
PSN, is this thing safe to be putting my information on. I know I picked a hell of time networkwise to jump on the PSN. Could someone consolidate these happenings to me.
Also games: Here's the games I know I want to get so far: SSFIV, Infamous, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, RE5, God of War III. I'm not that into FPS. What other games are the must haves?
Any other information you would give to a kid who knows virtually nothing about the PS3 but is familiar with gaming in general, mainly Nintendo consoles.

Do you like RPGs? White Knight Chronicles is great, it allows tons of customization. If you like more Action-Oriented games, Way of the Samurai 3 is awesome. When it comes to Rail Shooters, The Shoot (requires PS Move) and Dead Space Extraction (also requires PS Move) are fun.Jamisonia wrote:Here's the games I know I want to get so far: SSFIV, Infamous, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, RE5, God of War III. The Gold Edition of RE5 includes the alternate scenarios, versus mode, a new mercenaries mode, and I think new characters to use in mercenaries/versus. All of that is normally DLC. The Greatest Hits version is just a re-issue of the standard version.I want to get Resident Evil 5, whats the difference between the greatest hits and Gold editions?
Any USB that has the proper connections on both ends will work. It doesn't charge when the controller is off but there are controller charging stations available.Controller wise, I know there was sixaxis and now there's Dualshock 3. Uhhh that's up to you.PSN, is this thing safe to be putting my information on.
I'm not sure what you're into, but the games I've had the most fun with on the console are Demon's Souls, the Ryu ga Gotoku (Yakuza) games, BlazBlue Continuum Shift, Metal Gear Solid 4, and 3D Dot Game Heroes. What other games are the must haves?

The difference between DS3 and Sixaxis is the addition of rumble in the former, I believe.Jamisonia wrote: Controller wise, I know there was sixaxis and now there's Dualshock 3. Yes, you can use any mini-usb cable. No, it doesn't charge on a slim if the system is off. I usually use my cable box (which is always on even though it's off) to charge my controllers. It has 2 connections.
A lot of USB wall chargers won't work with the PS3 controllers because they're not "intelligent". That is, the PS3 controllers seems to want to initially communicate as well as get power. The dumb USB wall chargers only supply power.

Most of the 'different version' releases are all-in-one deals that include the original release and most of (if not all) of the downloadable content that was released for the game. In the case of Resident Evil 5, I would definitely recommend the Gold Edition. It includes every piece of downloadable content on the disc. The Gold Edition is also the only version that has built in 'Move support. Borderlands "Game of the Year" and Uncharted 2 "Game of the Year" editions are similar packages that contain all DLC released up to that point.
The Dual Shock 3s will charge using any mini to full sized USB cable (like the one packed with the system). Longer cables should work just fine.
PSN is free to play on and even to access the PSN store through. You do not have to put credit card info on your account to purchase items. You can go to any local big box store and purchase credit to use on the PSN store. Even Amazon sells the cards/codes.
The games you have listed are great titles. Most of them have dropped in price. I would suggest checking out Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 if you are looking at God of War. Resident Evil 5 Gold should be a no-brainer for anyone looking for 2 player coop RE action (the entire game can be played 2 player coop). I would be happy to play online with you, as I play that game all the time. Metal Gear Solid 4 may be another game you would want to check out.

In my opinion, 3D Dot Game Heroes is the best Zelda game since Wind Waker.brunoafh wrote:and 3D Dot Game Heroes.

I have spent a lot of time on my PS3, and my recommendations for good games so far:
Action / Adventure:
Ninja Gaiden Sigma (1 & 2) (if you haven't played the xbox version)
Vanquish
Yakuza Series
L.A. Nior
Portal 2
Uncharted 2
Red Dead Redemption
Tomb Raider Trilogy
Heavy Rain
MGS4
RPG:
3D Dot Game Heros. (only RPG i've played on ps3, but for good reason!)
Racing:
Sega Rally Revo
Ridge Racer 7 (can find cheap now)
GT5
Fighting:
Mortal Kombat
SSFIV
Marvel vs Capcom 3
PSN Games:
Bionic Commando Rearmed (do not buy 2)
Lara Croft & The Guardian of Light
Pac-Man Championship Edition DX
Braid
There are some really good games on the horizon also. Last guardian is on the top of that list.

I like that endorsement. I'll can't wait to play my copy which is still shrink-wrapped. First, I need to finish Wii VC - LoZ Ocarina of Time. I still have a long way to go but it's great so far.noiseredux wrote:In my opinion, 3D Dot Game Heroes is the best Zelda game since Wind Waker.brunoafh wrote:and 3D Dot Game Heroes.

Some of my favorite PS3 games are God of War, Blazblue, Batman Arkham Asylum, Tekken 6, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, Super Stardust HD (PSN), Scott Pilgrim (PSN), plus various ports of old arcade games like Puzzle Fighter and Final Fight are only on the PSN, so I would get a PSN card or two and browse around when the store comes back up soon
NES, SNES, PS1, N64, DC, PS2, GCN, Wii, PS3, 360, GB, GBC, GBA, GBA SP, PSP 3000, and 3DS XL

Another vote for Demon's Souls. It's brutally hard, but it's so satisfying to beat. I'll also toss in a recommendation for Resonance of Fate. It's got a really cool battle system and an interesting way of telling its story.
