Theres something on my mind lately and I think that it would make an interesting topic.
We have all heard sound clips of videogames in movies, commericals, and tv shows.
but for the most part it seems that they use the most classic soundbites from the atari 2600 era. The bleeps and bloops from classics like Centipede, Asteroids, pac-man and others.
From 90's sitcoms, to web shows, to movies, and everywhere in between you've heard it.
Many of us that grew up back then, instantly recognize the game it comes from. Even older adults that grew up back then instantly recognize the sounds and know where they come from. Kids today too, They hear the sounds and recognize it as video game sounds, but do they know of their origins?
Even now you can still hear those sound clips in newer stuff as well. Why do producers and audio techicians still use them? Will we still be using them 20 years from now?
Is it a nostalgia trip? Are they lazy? Do they think that if they use newer games' sound effects and music would people still recognize it?
Its not that I'm being negative or I am aganst it, but I do belive that this is an important part of videogame culture as well!
Post your opinion of what I have just said here, or clips of media with the sound effects of games in them. Newer games too, and if they are instantly recognized as much as their older counterparts.

I don't know about modern media but the gas station I regularly go to has the ring sound from Sonic.

My guess would be laziness, since they almost always do it while the persons supposed to be playing a much newer console.
I doubt most T.V./movie characters know how to run emulation on home consoles either...

The old sounds are very distinctive. They were created with limited sound chips and have the singular connotation of "video game" when you hear it.
There also is a case for reuse. See the Wilhelm Scream, for example.

That freakin' cash register sound.
I know what it is, always have, but every time I hear it my ears perk up. "Who's playing Sonic? Oh wait..."
To the topic at hand, it actually kinda pisses me off to see some show or movie where someone is (faking) playing a video game, and no matter what system they're playing (its usually a playstation of some kind, recognizable I guess) the sound effects are always bleeps and bloops. Cause you know, technology never advanced at all in the past thirty years and video games are just toys anyway.
It also pisses me off that they're so blatantly faking as they wave the (disconnected) controller around and mash the buttons like they're having a seizure. But I guess that's unrelated.
As to why they do it? I firmly believe its laziness. Its the easiest way to convey "video game" without having to actually show anything.

Also keep in mind that a lot of older folks believe video games are still just like Super Mario Bros. They likely would not understand it was a video game otherwise - they'd likely be wondering why the kids are hitting buttons spasticly while watching an action film.

I'd already seen the 16 core one, but it's still hilarious. But then I got to #4 and laughed my ass off.J T wrote:Here are 8 scenes that prove that Hollywood just doesn't get tech:
