Need help connecting MacBook to CRT TV

Post by EllertMichael »

Hey friends,

So, I own a MacBook that has a Mini Display port and wish to connect it to my TATE CRT (Philips 20PT6441) television to use with MacMAME. Since Apple does not make a Mini Display to Video adapter, I had to get a little creative. But before I place my order I just want to know what you guys think of this:

from computer:
Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter

to:
6ft DVI-I to 3 RCA Component Video Cable (DVI-I - 3-RCA)
into the television.

and for sound:
6ft Premium 3.5mm Stereo Male to 2RCA Male 22AWG Cable (Gold Plated) - Black

Will this look okay? Is there a better option?
Thanks for your help!

EDIT: so upon closer inspection, the discription of the Mini Display to DVI adapter reads:
NOTE: This adapter does NOT support analog signal. It will only output a digital signal. It can be used with DVI to DVI and DVI to HDMI cables and adapters, but NOT DVI to VGA.
So am I out of luck with this one? :?

I tried hooking a laptop to my HD CRT with a DVI upscaler. Even though the DVI upscaler works on a LCD HD, no luck on the HD CRT. If you have a Dreamcast or XBox, There are some great Mame EMUs of those.

Would this work:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9319G/A

I am not up to date on Mini Display port protocols, but I think this is the answer you were looking for.

It isn't - that's for the Mini DVI ports that the older models had. Newer models have Mini Displayport. As the OP mentioned, Apple doesn't make an adapter to go to composite or s-video from that. The only analog output they make an adapter for is VGA (and even that is odd, since the normal Displayport spec is pure digital). I believe some people have had success with using the VGA adapter, then going to a VGA to TV adapter...but even success using the VGA output to VGA devices seems slightly hit or miss if you look at Apple's product reviews.
okay. so how about:
Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter
to:
6ft VGA to 3 RCA Component Video Cable (HD15 - 3-RCA)
to the television?
Regarding the VGA to component cable - as the description says, it'll only work if your device supports doing that. I haven't found anyone saying that the Apple adapter does.

My mistake, I read MiniDVI as Mini Displayport. EllertMichael, you might have to the go usb graphics card route.

You need an Active Display-Port to VGA adaptor and a mini-DP to Display-Port adaptor.

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I'm on a MacBook 6,1 with a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M. It would be nice if Apple just made a Mini Display to VGA adapter, but from what it looks like people have been waiting for that for years now so I doubt that's going to happen anytime soon...

Thanks again, Niode.

so I would need to go computer to:
Mini DisplayPort Male to DisplayPort Female Adapter
into:
6ft 28AWG DisplayPort to VGA Cable - White
through:
6ft VGA to 3 RCA Component Video Cable (HD15 - 3-RCA)
into the television?

I can't just go mini display to VGA to component, huh? I just figure the less adapters the better for video quality...
does the mini display to displayPort adapter change the signal from digital to analog or something?

No, it HAS to be an active display port adaptor to output analogue. A passive cable simply won't work.

So... I still haven't taken the plunge with this. as the only working option I've found is a mess of chords...

but I came across this today and it looks promising:
I think I'm gonna give it a shot, and I'll report back.
If anyone has any feedback before I place my order, I'd love to hear it!
