Two things bugged me with the story without getting too spoilery. It focuses a bit too much on the upper world and not much on the other one. In fact, the game as a whole has an interesting history to it that doesn't really get used in the story enough I thought. Also, it goes a bit overboard on the typical anime melodrama and preachiness towards the end. I just couldn't stop rolling my eyes. Blah, blah, we stand together, blah, blah we fight for freedom blah blah you're evil and you suck blah blah time for dramatic poses. Moments like that make me feel like I'm playing something for kidsXeogred wrote:Well I'm just curious to see if your opinion will change if and when you beat the game noise, plus all my AI complaints with the battle system don't really pop up until later in the game when everyone has a lot more abilities and whatnot.
Another issue I had with FFXIII's storytelling is that it was 90% about the 6 or so main characters and that was that. So you're out of luck if you don't like them, because they don't really develop anyone or anything else. Also as much as I hate Seymour from FFX, I'd put FFXIII's main villain below him, who was just absolutely worthless as a character and was very forgettable.

Your second point: That's pretty much why by the end of the game I came to start really hating it and beating it was not satisfying at all, lol. By then it was time to pull out the cliche' 101 book and Lightning's speech was just laughable.
@noise: Well don't forget the game does open more towards the later chapters, but this is also another issue I have with the game... the pacing got terrible from this point on and towards the end. It was pretty disorienting to me to spend about 30 hours of brutal linearity only for it to completely change later on, you get accustomed to that linearity so when the game finally opened up, it just felt weird. I even put the game down for awhile when I got to that point because I wasn't liking the dramatic change, like you were suddenly playing a different game.

yeah well that part might throw me for a loop. But here's a secret -- I don't necessarily HAVE to beat a game to like it. I mean really if I spend 30 hours enjoying it, and then decide not to proceed, well I still got 30 hours of enjoyment out of the thing. That's more than I can say for plenty other games. I lot of you rave about Portal for instance, though I'm under the impression it takes a lot less than 30 hours to beat it...Xeogred wrote: @noise: Well don't forget the game does open more towards the later chapters, but this is also another issue I have with the game... the pacing got terrible from this point on and towards the end. There's some speculation going around the internet (no sources to the rumors though, so I won't provide a link) that this game may have been canceled.
For discussion's sake, what do you guys think? Will this be turned into FF XV, or outright canceled? I really don't want to see that last one, since this game seemed interesting, but this is Square Enix we are talking about. Logic went out the window sometime between 7/7/2000 and 19/7/2001

I didn't believe the rumors because... well... they're rumors. But it is nice to have confirmation that it's being worked on.

I'm still pretty sure this game is never going to see the light of day.

Hopefully we will get news about it at the Tokyo Game Show. Also, I know it's silly, but anyone else wish it'd be rebranded as Final Fantasy XV? This looked like it was better than XIII and I think the FF name needs something to clear all the mud that has smeared it the past 3 years.

Re: FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII
UPDATE: Square Enix president Yoichi Wada said over Twitter last month (July 2012) that Versus-XIII is in full production and is not vapor-ware by any means.
I don't think the name is going to be changed because I believe Square filed for the Versus-XIII trademark, but if it weren't for that it would certainly make sense for them to just make it XV.
Now, if only Type-0 would get a damn localization already (played the Japanese demo on my PSP some time ago and it was very good).
