I don't know the correct terminology to describe what I consider good writing. But I suppose I could give some examples.brunoafh wrote:What do you believe "quality writing" to be?MrEco wrote:It's funny you would say that, seeing as I've already found plenty of examples of quality writing and well made characters in anime. Spice and Wolf
Death Note
Code Geass
All of those had particularly good writing I thought. Though I'll admit there aren't a ton they are still good. And that list is only comprised of the ones I thought had the absolute best writing. I could expand it by adding titles with only "decent" writing and I would still prefer them greatly to DBZ.

I hope this is a joke.MrEco wrote:Code Geass. Quality writing.
The second season wasn't even what it was originally intended to be (the director wanted it to be 50 episodes from the get go and the story was not supposed to be "reset" after seasons 1). Instead they broke it into two seasons with a gap there and the second one was one of the biggest messes of a show I've ever seen. They were clearly creating every episode randomly at a weekly basis and had absolutely no idea where things were going in the long run. Seriously can you argue that worthless Chinese arc had any impact whatsoever on the grand scale of things?
Also have you seen any DBZ in Japanese? It's completely different. Lots of good use of silence. The dub added probably thousands of lines of extra worthless dialogue to the characters. The music was terrible. They made mistakes like depicting Dr. Gero as the leader of the RR Army (Commander Red clearly was in DB). etc. Yeah you could say the dub has shitty writing and everything alright, but not the original. I won't argue DBZ is brilliant at all or anything but the two versions are incredibly different.
And don't even get me started on Gundam 00. Sunrise is absolute trash thesedays, nothing they've made in the last 10 years holds a candle to their 80's/90's shows.
@brunoafh: I think that's a little low, you're not looking hard enough.
Re: What Anime are you Currently Watching?/Anime Recommendations
Well written anime exists, but there are very few and they're far between. I can think of a number of examples, but for the most part I've always believed that anime isn't where you should be looking if you want to experience some awesome storyline with superb writing or something. Anime provides a much different entertainment that has it's own value.Xeogred wrote:@brunoafh: I think that's a little low, you're not looking hard enough.... anime has kind of destroyed my standards when it comes to regular TV/movies, they just don't even compare to me.
As for tv shows/movies, I hear you there, but not because anime has lowered my standards. I just hold it as a general rule that 90-95% of what's on tv is complete trash and 99% of what movies are playing in the theater are complete trash.
Re: What Anime are you Currently Watching?/Anime Recommendations
I guess that's easily an understandable way to look at it and I concur with your second point as well.
Anyways, didn't mean to jump on MrEco there too much but I just think Code Geass is too laughable to say has quality ANYTHING, and I wouldn't say Death Note has great writing either (even though I'm a fan and had a lot of fun with the series), like comparing it to Monster as so many people do is a joke in my opinion. Monster is far smarter on all ends.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is pretty much the best example I can think of for good writing, that and other sci-fi shows I've seen that are adaptations of novels (Crest of the Stars comes to mind). LOGH is just like watching a novel come to life and hilariously it even has history episodes, it may as well be a sci-fi historical series if anything. Not to make it sound boring, heh, it's just brilliant stuff. I'm not even big on politics/philosophy, but LOGH had me listening in and at awe at every moment.

Death Note has pretty terrible writing, really. I like the series, but there's plot holes a plenty, inexplicable actions, poor character development... I could go on.
The concept is cool, though, and it sustains most of the series.

The second half of Death Note was terrible. Mello and Near were grating characters. I prefer to believe it truly ended on Ladies Night.jfrost wrote:Death Note has pretty terrible writing, really. Also, finished Nadesico last night, and decided to finally drop Noein, as it wasn't doing anything for me. Kemonozume time.

Just finished watching Basilisk earlier today and I really enjoyed it. I found all of the characters extremely fascinating and was kept interested in each and every one of their motives as the story progressed. Rarely have I disliked a character as much as Yakushiji Tenzen, been interested in the fates of multiple characters, and found an overall story surprisingly moving.

I think I should point out something. I seem to be using a different definition for "writing" than you guys. When I say writing I'm talking about the dialog and nothing else. The plot and stuff I judge completely separately.

I agree on that about Death Note, though I like the ending. I was a Light fan and found it pretty fitting, heh.AmishSamurai wrote:The second half of Death Note was terrible. Mello and Near were grating characters. I prefer to believe it truly ended on Ladies Night.

Noein I enjoyed but it really was awkwardly slice of life for like over half the series, really weird. I didn't really like the art either, but it did have some pretty slick fights out of the few that popped up.
