The new Commodore is similar to just buying a netbook. Which I highly suggest if you just want to play old games via emulation. I consider it the Gameboy of PC gaming.

Which are you suggesting, the commodore or the netbook?

A netbook. The commodore is awesome looking, but it will be the same functionwise and double the price.

I've played the demos for the Zombie/Alien Shooter games and loved them. I haven't played the Age of Empires games, but I love Age of Mythology even though I suck at it.

Is it sad that the price really isn't deterring me any? Besides, it's tough installing games onto my netbook w/no cd/dvd drive unless I go buy an external drive.

Typically I just rip the game disc to isos then take them with me on the harddrive. The only game I have ran from a dvd in years is Borderlands. I highly suggest looking for a 360 HD-DVD drive. It is a very good external DVD drive and can be picked up for cheap. The Fry's in Atlanta had them up until last Christmas when I bought the last three for my brothers church ~ at $30 a pop.

You can easily get one for $50:

Ouch! I typed a lot of stuff but for some reason I forgot to send it to the server. Well, let's try again.

The Commodore looks a pain in the ass to upgrade so I would get a normal PC instead. Unless your mouse is horrible you won't need any other controller, if you want a driving wheel or a joystick it will be for a certain game.

FPS

Concerning FPS. If you haven't played many of them and you like old arcade-like games I think you will love Doom. To me it really feels like half mdoern FPS, half Robotron with all the focus on moving and strafing and with aiming only taking place in a plane.

If you want to make the jump to online FPS, I would ignore Counter-Strike for now, as I think it's slow paced, instakill gameplay is pretty bad outside of competitive play because it leads to camping and boring games.

If you want to play alone with no regards to teams or anything, you can't go wrong with Quake Live. It's the fastest paced shooter I have even played (or tried to play, because I'm horrible at it) and it really gets you pumped.

Team Fortress 2 has something for everyone, even people who don't normally like FPS tend to like this because it has so many different strategies you can choose that there must be something for everyone. From a class with a turret that aims for him, to the Quake-ish soldier, you will always find a class you like and how you play changes a lot depending on who you are facing.

ADVENTURE GAMES

Start with Monkey Island. It's one of the best point of click adventures around and it's very accesible compared to Sierra's offerings.

Hope that helps =D
